New Library Publication: Italian Art of Papermaking | Library of Congress

The Arab art of papermaking by hand came to the Italian peninsula in the 13th century, a time when the city of Fabriano was well-positioned to become the heart of the artisan craft. Published by the Library of Congress in association with Oak Knoll Press, “Fabriano: City of Medieval and Renaissance Papermaking” by Sylvia Rodgers Albro describes the role that this Italian city played in the craft.

Albro, a senior paper conservator at the Library of Congress, details technical advancements introduced in Fabriano, including machinery and equipment, use of watermarks and improvements in the physical processes of papermaking.  As a result of these innovations, Fabriano and other centers in Italy developed along similar lines. Italian hand-made paper was unrivaled in Europe from the 14th to the 18th centuries. The lustrous white sheets were favored by merchants and artists like Michelangelo, princes and popes and a growing international clientele. Many books, prints and manuscripts made with Italian paper from this time period have survived in remarkably pristine condition, retaining qualities still imitated by modern papermakers.

Albro analyzes the conditions that have kept Fabriano’s papermaking industry so successful since the medieval period, while other areas ceased production. More than half of the book’s 230 illustrations—from rare books, prints, drawings, maps and manuscripts from the 13th to 19th centuries—are from the Library’s collections. “Fabriano” was published with support from the Library’s first John W. Kluge Staff Fellowship and a publication grant from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.  The “Fabriano” book with 230 illustrations is available for $95 in the Library of Congress Shop, 10 First St. S.E., Washington, D.C., 20540-4985. Learn more about ordering the book by calling (888) 682-3557 or visiting loc.gov/shop/.

Great Local Event: All-Day Series of Talkson Geographic Information Systems

The Library of Congress will celebrate GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Day on Nov. 16 with an all-day series of talks on the use of GIS technology in the federal government, the private sector, academia and K-12 schools. The discussions will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the reading room of the Library’s Geography and Map Division, on the basement level of the James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C.  Tickets are not required for this event, which is free and open to the public. A Geographic Information System is a computer system for storing, analyzing, manipulating and displaying digital data that is linked to positions on the Earth’s surface.  GIS provides the modern basis for digital geographic analysis and map-making. GIS Day is held during Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 13-19)—an annual, global celebration of GIS technology, with events held by organizations around the world.  Formally started in 1999, GIS Day aims to provide a forum to promote the benefits of GIS research, demonstrate real-world applications of GIS and foster open idea-sharing and growth in the GIS community.

The Library’s morning session will include presentations from high-school and university students and recent graduates showcasing their environmentally-focused GIS research.  The morning will also feature talks on the use of GIS in the federal government and by non-profit organizations and will highlight career opportunities in the growing field of GIS. The afternoon session will focus on GIS activities and resources throughout the Capitol Hill complex.  Cartographers, GIS analysts and library technicians from the Library’s Geography and Map Division and the Library’s Congressional Research Service will discuss ongoing projects and services.  These are designed to broaden the availability of geospatial data and provide GIS analysis and custom cartography to Congress.  The afternoon also will feature talks from congressional aides using GIS to visualize geographic data and inform constituents of policy issues and news through digital cartography. The program will conclude with tours of the Geography and Map Division’s collections, including rare cartographic treasures. Learn more about the schedule as well as information about the Library of Congress’ largest and most comprehensive collection of maps and atlases in the world, some 5.4 million cartographic items that date from the 14th century to the present time by visiting loc.gov.

How to save Money on a Summer Tune Up for your Car

This summer millions of people will get in their cars to go on vacation. The summer heat can put extra stress on your car, especially if you are running the air conditioning, so you want to make sure it is properly tuned up before hitting the road.

Here are a few tips to keep you safe on your travels and stretch your dollar the furthest with your local mechanic or dealership:

The first thing you should always look at before a long trip is the condition of your tires and braking system. If the tires are wearing below the recommended level you will want to replace all four for safety. During this service you should also have the brake pads replaced to cut your labor cost, as they will already have removed some of the parts blocking their access. You can also negotiate for a free alignment if you are purchasing the tires from the same place.

Topping off all of your fluids, especially the coolant, is important to keeping your engine running properly. If you go to the dealership you can often get these simple tasks done for free during an oil change. Make sure you shop around as you can almost always find a coupon for an oil change for $20 with the extra services such as topping off fluids and filling your tires included for free. Most locations will also rotate your tires which is important to extend the life. They will always try to sell you more services when unnecessary. A dealership will almost always recommend that you replace your air filters which they might charge $100. Kindly tell them no thank you and go ahead to your local Wal-Mart where you can buy the filters for $10 and replace them in a few minutes. You have now taken care of a variety of maintenance tasks for only $30!

Your spark plugs and wires are another part that you can look into repairing yourself to save a significant amount of money. Your local automotive parts shop can help you find exactly the right parts that you need for your car and the tools required in just a few minutes. They are always helpful and can point you in the right direction for replacing both of these items which is very easy to do in 30 minutes on your own.

These simple tips can save you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars when tuning up your car for summer travels. Always remember to get a second or third quote when any major repairs are mandatory to protect yourself from getting ripped off. If you are not sure what a repair should cost visitautoservicecosts.com to learn more about automotive preventative maintenance and their associated costs.

The Importance of Small Acts of Kindness

You never know when or how a small act of kindness will go far and beyond what you could imagine in a day. Today I was on the receiving end. For the past two weeks I’ve taken a shuttle bus. The past two weeks I have seen some of the same faces,at the same times of the day. Little did I know I would thank these strangers for their small act of kindness two weeks into my routine.

Today I was a little late getting to the shuttle. The bus was on the verge of leaving and the next bus doesn’t come for another 25 minutes. On inclement weather days, you don’t want to miss that bus.

Today after work, the people on the bus told the bus driver to wait for me. He literally would have left me there, but they waited for me.

I was very thankful and made sure everyone on the bus knew I really appreciated it! I’ll try to make cookies next week to thank everyone for their kindness.

They told me they told the bus driver to wait for me because they liked my good sense of humor and conversation the past week and some days. Nothing changed today, we all were cracking jokes and talking just like any other day on the bus.

There were some new faces on the bus today that do not normally catch that shuttle time, but it was nice to hear them say ” Man, I should really catch the 4:30 bus more often. This bus ride is the fun and happy group.”

I actually like this group of people. I see them bright and early in the morning and at the end of my work day.

They might have thought holding the bus for me was no big deal, but that act of kindness  made sure I didn’t add 30 extra minutes to my commute. I have to take not only a bus shuttle everyday, but then drive home in rush hour traffic after getting off the bus. It’s a long day, but I cannot say that what I do is not rewarding at the end of the day because my actions throughout the day touch lives.

Today one act of kindness truly touched my life. It’s the little things that count. Today a woman told me God is going to bless me simply from listening to her just vent about  her current life situation and the things she regretted throughout her life. I didn’t judge her. I just listened. Sometimes it is just nice to have someone listen to you. I mean really listen to you. So, I let her borrow my ears.

It’s just nice to meet kind souls. Yes, I thought this was news worthy. So, here is the blog post.
