Top 5 Questions to stop sabotaging New Year’s Resolution goals

Doctor Bradley Nelson offers tips on successfully achieving New Year's Resolutions
Are you making a list of  New Year’s resolutions? Many people assume that success is a matter of self-discipline, yet research suggests that willpower is inherently limited. We can set our minds on goals, such as eating less, exercising more, making or saving more money, but we will ultimately fail unless our emotions are aligned, says veteran holistic physician and international trainer Dr. Bradley Nelson.

How Questions and Tips Energize Your Goals for 2017

The most common cause of failing to meet goals is self-sabotage – the unseen, often unconscious thoughts and behaviors that keep us from becoming the person we hope to be. Self-sabotage often happens because of emotional baggage – unresolved “trapped” emotions that cause people to act in ways that are contrary what they say they want to make. Dr. Nelson shares these questions to help people identify and resolve unconscious blocks to success:

  • What needs to be released in order for me to carry out this goal?
  • Am I ok with achieving my goal?
  • Do I deserve to meet my goal?
  • Am I blocked from achieving my goal?
  • Is there anything negative related to me accomplishing my goal, such as more work, potential negative effect on others?

Additional tips to prevent Self-Sabotage

  • Make a goal calendar, and mark off each day
  • Write down goals
  • Journal experiences. The more involved we are with our goals, the more likely we are to succeed
  • Tell friends about New Year’s Resolution goals. Yes, Facebook friends matter and accountability is a big motivator.
  • Make weekly progress notes and photos

“Part of the problem with goals is that we tend to get depressed if we don’t meet them,” Dr. Nelson says. “It’s important that we aren’t too hard on ourselves if we don’t make our goals. Just the fact that you are trying is a great achievement and if you don’t make your goals, try again.” For more information, please visit DrBradleyNelson.com and EmotionCode.TV
