Are Chocolate drinks healthy?

20140102-190839.jpg

If anyone has told you eating chocolate or drinking chocolate will get you fat, I’m happy to let you know chocolate is really healthy for you. Particularly dark chocolate is healthy for you and it can help you slim down!

I try to have one or two cups of chocolate a day. It’s either hot chocolate or chocolate milk. My first cup is in the morning during breakfast. My second cup is in the evening.

Hot chocolate is a great before bed drink as well. I sleep well if I drink hot chocolate 1-2 hours before bed. Try sometime!

Family meals: Gluten Free Meatballs

20140102-180720.jpg

If you are looking for a healthy and delicious meat to serve your family, cannot go wrong with gluten free Italian style beef meatballs. You serve the gluten free meatballs with a sauce as appetizers or use the meatballs to make a family value meal.

Here are some family value meals you can use gluten free meatballs in:

– Thai Pizza
– Meatball Stroganoff
– Tater Tot Casserole
– Breakfast burritos
– Hot Buffalo Subs
– Baked Meatball Ziti ( all you will need for this is a jar of tomato sauce, shredded cheese, 6 cups of cooked ziti and fresh basil). Cook it at 350 degrees and bake for 25 minutes.

Grape chili meatballs are fabulous too. To me grape chili meatballs simply use grape Kelly, chili sauce, crushed red pepper flakes.

Heat that grape jelly and add the chili sauce and red peppers. Done!

What are the health benefits of Brussels sprouts?

20140102-164802.jpg

It’s a New year and the perfect time to follow some good habits. I plan on making healthy but delicious meals for my household since I’m the lady of house.

And one rule I plan on following is having plenty of green vegetables in our meals. Tonight I am baking gourmet Brussels sprouts for our dinner.

Brussels sprouts are wonderful to serve at meal times because the Brussels sprouts offer an excellent source of vitamin C & A, potassium and folate.

To make Brussels sprouts for your family follow these directions:

1. Get a medium size bowl and put olive oil in the bowl.
2. Dip your Brussels sprouts in the olive oil.
3. Place olive oil Brussels sprouts on a pan.
4. Season your Brussels sprouts. My favorite seasons are pepper, roasted garlic and chipotle seasoning.

5. Preheat the oven on 350 Fahrenheit degrees. Bake for 30 minutes.

Where was the last place you fell in love?

Read this cool article on feeling emotions throughout your body. NPR asked could you imagine the place where you last fell in love.

It’s vivid to me. The first time I fell in love…really fell in love,I was on 400 Maryland Ave,SW Washington DC. I didn’t know it at the time. I didn’t know what love looked out or how it felt.

The last time I fell in love was on 1539 35th ST NW. This time I knew because it was love that inspired me to be there at that very moment. I was excited ,full of butterflies. I was scared as hell too because before that I confused tainted emotions with authentic care. I didn’t want another regret. But this moment was different. My last time falling in love was quite like my first. Same eyes , same smile…but this time I met the one with 2 feet in rather than 1. This time was more breath taking than the first. I wasn’t dreaming. It was real. I could feel strength but this time it wasn’t coming from me.

It was the first time in my life I felt truly vulnerable but more so I felt alive. I’ve been feeling that way since the last time I fell in love…I guess because it hasn’t stopped. It seems I’m falling deeper but of course I’m scared to say that I am. I guess it’s human nature.

Beef tongue recipe

Today is the first day I’m making beef tongue on my own. Usually my mom cooks it for the family but I now live in my first place out of college. I’m designated as the ” mom” now or I make most of the family meals for my brother and me.

I am also trying out new cooking adventures because it don’t want to burn any dinner I make for Alex.

Alex is visiting family in California right now but he’ll be spending time with me when he returns. I want to make sure he knows I can take care of him.

Anyways, back to my beef tongue. It’s a very delicate meat you serve with just about anything.

To prepare the meat I took it put of the package and cleaned it with a cold water rinse ( pictured below):

Next I put the beef tongue in the crock pot with garlic, celery , pepper, chipotle Mrs.Dash and carrots. You can add onions as well. I use Mrs.Dash because I try to keep myself from having too much sodium or salt in my diet.

Once all my ingredients are in the crock pot, I fill the pot with water enough to cover the tongue. I slow cook it on low for 8 hours to make it extra tender.

Right now I am waiting for it to slow cook.

But once it is done slow cooking I will slice the top of the tongue off and discard it. The rest I will serve for dinner. Stay tuned.

Preventing high blood pressure part 1

In 2014 I’m aiming to be a healthier, stronger and more positive me. To start, I’m going to make sure I keep my blood pressure under control at all times. Beyond physical fitness, I have to make sure I’m eating and drinking right. One thing I like to do during the day and right before bed is drink hot cocoa. It can help lower blood pressure and it provides a good source of vitamins and minerals.
