Life and family: Six tips for a stress free summer

It is the summertime and we hope the living is easy but sometimes the least expected happens. Families face all kinds of pressure during the summer time: the kids are bored; there’s not enough money to go on that perfect vacation; the job is stressing you out and you have no idea how prepared you or the kids will be by the time for everyone to go back to school and work when it’s all over. Luckily veteran holistic physician and author of The Emotion Code, Dr. Bradley Nelson, has tips to share on how to enjoy a stress-free summer.

Beating the Summertime (Stress) Blues

Even though summers are supposed to be relaxing, they can be stressful. In one survey, a third of Americans reported that they find themselves more stressed during the summer than any other season. Here are some of Dr. Nelson’s tips for enjoying a more relaxing summer:

1. Plan ahead and be flexible about your expectations, whether it’s summer activities for the kids or vacation plans. Everyone else has expectations and sometimes they won’t match with yours. Plan for spontaneity. If you allow the plans that others have to be a part of what brings you joy, you’ll have more fun as everyone shares ideas and activities. Be the one who makes the vacation fun for others and it will be more joyful for you.

2. Be aware of what your body needs. This includes healthy food, plenty of water, rest and exercise. So don’t throw your routines out the window when you’re on vacation. Get plenty of exercise so you’ll feel good. Continue eating healthy. You’ll feel better about yourself if you’re really taking care of your body.

3. Decide to take care of yourself emotionally. You may need specific things such as the emotional support of a spouse, a lunch date with a friend or even just some time alone. Decide how busy you want to be – or not be. Say “no” to trying to do too much if it interferes with your health, family time or if it feels like it’ll cause too much stress for you.

4. Communicate with love. If you’re feeling stressed by interactions with family or others, take a breather. You might go outside for a few minutes to get some fresh air. Be kind to everyone, including yourself. Give hugs. Make sure you’re not overreacting. None of us communicate perfectly. Try to see what others really mean, not just what they say. Give them the benefit of the doubt because it’s likely no offense was meant. Ask for clarification and react appropriately, with kindness, love and forgiveness. Some people really don’t have a handle on their behavior but it doesn’t have to affect how you feel or be your problem.

5. Choose Your Emotions: Most people have this mistaken belief that our emotions choose us; that we are at the mercy of whatever emotions we tend to start feeling. But the reality of it is, no matter what the circumstance is, we always are choosing our own emotions. It’s important to recognize that fact. You don’t always have control over what happens to you but you can choose to respond proactively.

6. Identify and release “trapped emotions,” unresolved feelings from past negative and traumatic events emotional baggage can cause us to make wrong assumptions, react emotionally and contribute to anxiety, depression and most forms of illness.

On Friday, June 2, artist Mirta Kupferminc and psychoanalyst Tova Shvartzman will discuss art, Judaism and psychoanalysis in conversations with University of Maryland professor Saul Sosnowski, at the Library of Congress. The lecture and short film will take place at noon, in Dining Room A on the sixth floor of the Library’s James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington D.C.

The event is free and open to the public.  Tickets are not needed.

Kupferminc is director of “LABA-BA: Laboratorio de Arte y Cultura Judía” and Shvartzman is its director of content.  The program, which supports artists’ fellowship programs in Argentina, is based on “ LABA: A Laboratory for Jewish Culture” at the 14th Street Y in New York, where a mix of visual artists, writers, dancers, musicians and actors are brought together to study classic Jewish texts in a non-religious, open setting. Kupferminc will share her recent works including a video presented in Venice during the commemoration of the 500 years of the Venetian Ghetto and images for her site-specific installation in the third Jerusalem Biennale in Israel. The installation, “Traduttore-Traditore” represents a destroyed Tower of Babel. Shvartzman, a writer, poet and psychoanalyst by profession, will discuss the Tower of Babel, as it appears in the Bible, in conjunction with “The Library of Babel,” by Jorge Luis Borges.

Moreover, Sosnowski, professor of Latin American Literature and Culture at the University of Maryland at College Park, will moderate the panel.  He has written many books including “Borges and the Kabbalah: Paths to the Word” (images by Kupferminc and text by Sosnowski). The program is sponsored by the Library’s Hebrew Language Table and the Hispanic Division, in cooperation with the Embassy of Argentina. Visit loc.gov for more information.

Why the Trump Administration should support successful clean car standards

WASHINGTON (March 15, 2017) – Trump administration today announced it will re-open a review of common-sense automobile pollution standards for model years 2022-2025, which are instrumental to the rejuvenation of America’s automotive manufacturing sector and could drive down fuel costs for consumers.

Bob Keefe, executive director of the national, nonpartisan business group Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2) has said:

“You have to wonder what is motivating the Trump administration to drive such a successful, Made-in-America policy into a ditch. It’s simply reckless and irresponsible, and will once again put America in the rearview mirror of foreign automakers that will be glad to dominate the market for the next generation of more efficient vehicles.”

E2 was founded by business people who helped advocate for the country’s first greenhouse gas emissions limits for vehicles, which were passed by the state of California in 2002 and became the foundation for the federal emissions standards. California’s groundbreaking legislation helped spur innovation in the auto and fuels industries – creating thousands of jobs – and ultimately helped advance widespread adoption of hybrid, electric and alternative fuels vehicles.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, more than 259,000 Americans now work in clean vehicle production. Those jobs, along with hundreds of millions of dollars saved through fuel efficiency by businesses and consumers alike, are now at risk because of the Trump administration’s shortsighted actions, says Keefe. These same standards are helping spur production of the modern-day auto industry’s most efficient vehicles  while saving consumers and businesses money. This clean car industry is also creating hundreds of thousands of jobs and reducing pollution along the way.

More background on E2

  • This E2 fact sheet on clean vehicle jobs in America is based on U.S. Department of Energy research. Among the 259,000 Americans who work in the clean vehicles sector, 112,000 work in hybrid EVs; 44,000 in plug-in hybrids; 44,000 in natural gas vehicles; 42,000 in EVs; and 17,000 in hydrogen and fuel-cell vehicles.
  • Social media graphics highlighting clean vehicle jobs data are here, here, and here.
  • More than 250 business leaders who support fuel efficiency standards signed this September 2016 E2 letter.
  • March 2016 “Clean Jobs America” report (Page 9) has details on how fuel efficiency standards help create jobs.

Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2) is a national, nonpartisan group of business leaders, investors, and professionals from every sector of the economy who advocate for smart policies that are good for the economy and good for the environment. New Library Publication: Italian Art of Papermaking | Library of Congress

The Arab art of papermaking by hand came to the Italian peninsula in the 13th century, a time when the city of Fabriano was well-positioned to become the heart of the artisan craft. Published by the Library of Congress in association with Oak Knoll Press, “Fabriano: City of Medieval and Renaissance Papermaking” by Sylvia Rodgers Albro describes the role that this Italian city played in the craft.

Albro, a senior paper conservator at the Library of Congress, details technical advancements introduced in Fabriano, including machinery and equipment, use of watermarks and improvements in the physical processes of papermaking.  As a result of these innovations, Fabriano and other centers in Italy developed along similar lines. Italian hand-made paper was unrivaled in Europe from the 14th to the 18th centuries. The lustrous white sheets were favored by merchants and artists like Michelangelo, princes and popes and a growing international clientele. Many books, prints and manuscripts made with Italian paper from this time period have survived in remarkably pristine condition, retaining qualities still imitated by modern papermakers.

Albro analyzes the conditions that have kept Fabriano’s papermaking industry so successful since the medieval period, while other areas ceased production. More than half of the book’s 230 illustrations—from rare books, prints, drawings, maps and manuscripts from the 13th to 19th centuries—are from the Library’s collections. “Fabriano” was published with support from the Library’s first John W. Kluge Staff Fellowship and a publication grant from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.  The “Fabriano” book with 230 illustrations is available for $95 in the Library of Congress Shop, 10 First St. S.E., Washington, D.C., 20540-4985. Learn more about ordering the book by calling (888) 682-3557 or visiting loc.gov/shop/.

Great Local Event: All-Day Series of Talkson Geographic Information Systems

The Library of Congress will celebrate GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Day on Nov. 16 with an all-day series of talks on the use of GIS technology in the federal government, the private sector, academia and K-12 schools. The discussions will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the reading room of the Library’s Geography and Map Division, on the basement level of the James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C.  Tickets are not required for this event, which is free and open to the public. A Geographic Information System is a computer system for storing, analyzing, manipulating and displaying digital data that is linked to positions on the Earth’s surface.  GIS provides the modern basis for digital geographic analysis and map-making. GIS Day is held during Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 13-19)—an annual, global celebration of GIS technology, with events held by organizations around the world.  Formally started in 1999, GIS Day aims to provide a forum to promote the benefits of GIS research, demonstrate real-world applications of GIS and foster open idea-sharing and growth in the GIS community.

The Library’s morning session will include presentations from high-school and university students and recent graduates showcasing their environmentally-focused GIS research.  The morning will also feature talks on the use of GIS in the federal government and by non-profit organizations and will highlight career opportunities in the growing field of GIS. The afternoon session will focus on GIS activities and resources throughout the Capitol Hill complex.  Cartographers, GIS analysts and library technicians from the Library’s Geography and Map Division and the Library’s Congressional Research Service will discuss ongoing projects and services.  These are designed to broaden the availability of geospatial data and provide GIS analysis and custom cartography to Congress.  The afternoon also will feature talks from congressional aides using GIS to visualize geographic data and inform constituents of policy issues and news through digital cartography. The program will conclude with tours of the Geography and Map Division’s collections, including rare cartographic treasures. Learn more about the schedule as well as information about the Library of Congress’ largest and most comprehensive collection of maps and atlases in the world, some 5.4 million cartographic items that date from the 14th century to the present time by visiting loc.gov.
