Girls that Code Rock

In a competitive job market, it is always important to build up your skill sets. This summer I am taking a variety of courses to receive certificates that help make me more valuable on the job market. You can do the same. I offer entrepreneur consulting services on how to truly generate steady cash flow through digital marketing. The great thing about making money on the Internet is that you can generate cash flow round the clock. You can make money as you sleep. The bigger your network, the better.

I started getting familiar with digital platforms around the age of 13. I became a professional writer by the age of 16.  By age 19, I started my first blog. It has gone through many transformations and the evolution continues as I discover more about myself, my community and my vision for the future.

It just so happens Fromgirltogirl.com has been my greatest asset. It has helped me land internships and jobs.It has helped me make great relationships with empowering non-profits and industry leaders across the board.

If I can give one piece of advice to girls, it would be this:

Think big and learn to code.

As digital marketing becomes more of a powerful tool, you will want to make sure you are an asset.

If you are a girl who wants to learn how to code, you will be happy to hear that Google is putting $50 million toward getting girls to code. The Google program is Made With Code.

Only 18% of students that receive a computer science degree are women. The next 3 years Google wants its Made With Code program to increase the percentage of women with computer science degrees.

Although I did not receive a computer science degree in college,I have learned to code over the years and I am continuing my learning. As a digital marketer, it is important to not only know how to market products, services, but also know how to code websites, software, and systems. Being a skilled programmer can truly help your career excel.

Learning how to code is not a boring task. In fact, coding is fun, challenging and very rewarding.

Here are some links you should check out if you want to learn how to code:

Why is Hair such a big deal in the Black Community?

Beyoncé and Jay Z’s daughter Blue Ivy is a very beautiful child. This week I could only shake my head on the harsh comments people left about this 2-year-old baby over her hair. As a Black woman, I feel disappointed that Black people still judge each other harshly not only by skin complexion, but also hair texture and appearance. There is a real political issue over Black women’s hair. Not having an acceptable natural hair texture can make many women feel insecure. Your hair is too dry. Your hair is too kinky. You don’t have “baby hair”. You don’t have good hair.

Being judged on hair texture and appearance can truly lower a Black woman’s self-esteem. Did you know hair could be such a big deal? It is no surprise there are so many women wearing hair weaves and putting chemicals in their hair to fit a standard of beauty. I like Blue Ivy’s natural hair. Her hair is authentic and refreshing. It inspires me to allow my daughter to wear her hair natural, if I am ever-blessed with a daughter.

I didn’t even embrace my natural hair until I was in college. I am proud to say that I am not afraid to embrace my hair texture. I am not afraid for the man I adore to touch my hair. No permission necessary. Feeling good about yourself is truly the most empowering feeling in the world. Do not let anyone take that empowerment away from you ever. This brings me to a recent discussion about natural hair and the professional career. Will natural locks ever become acceptable in Corporate America? I’ll tell you a story. My younger brother had a perfect afro growing up. It was flawless and people from all walks of life would look at it in admiration wishing they had a fro. He kept it neat and tidy. Then one day he started cutting his hair low and I knew it would never grow quite the same. He told me he cut his hair because he knew it would hold him back from career advancement in corporate America. It was just too ethnic. The same stigma goes for women with natural hair as people love when black women wear their hair straight as it is easy to play in. We don’t discuss that the heat to hair process is extremely damaging to the hair.

As a black woman who embraces natural hair, it feels like total acceptance of self and gives women more confidence because it’s their natural state. Growing up I was scared to wear my hair natural, let alone cut it low. I did both by the age of 20 and have no regrets. Accepting my natural beauty was a breakthrough for me. I urge all women of all ethnicities to accept themselves as is. You’ll be surprised how wonderful life gets when you do. You can learn about the Politics of Black Women’s Hair by reading The Root Issue: The Politics of Black Women’s HairWatch the videos below to get an understanding how hair politics negatively impact Black girls and Women. The Importance of Small Acts of Kindness

You never know when or how a small act of kindness will go far and beyond what you could imagine in a day. Today I was on the receiving end. For the past two weeks I’ve taken a shuttle bus. The past two weeks I have seen some of the same faces,at the same times of the day. Little did I know I would thank these strangers for their small act of kindness two weeks into my routine.

Today I was a little late getting to the shuttle. The bus was on the verge of leaving and the next bus doesn’t come for another 25 minutes. On inclement weather days, you don’t want to miss that bus.

Today after work, the people on the bus told the bus driver to wait for me. He literally would have left me there, but they waited for me.

I was very thankful and made sure everyone on the bus knew I really appreciated it! I’ll try to make cookies next week to thank everyone for their kindness.

They told me they told the bus driver to wait for me because they liked my good sense of humor and conversation the past week and some days. Nothing changed today, we all were cracking jokes and talking just like any other day on the bus.

There were some new faces on the bus today that do not normally catch that shuttle time, but it was nice to hear them say ” Man, I should really catch the 4:30 bus more often. This bus ride is the fun and happy group.”

I actually like this group of people. I see them bright and early in the morning and at the end of my work day.

They might have thought holding the bus for me was no big deal, but that act of kindness  made sure I didn’t add 30 extra minutes to my commute. I have to take not only a bus shuttle everyday, but then drive home in rush hour traffic after getting off the bus. It’s a long day, but I cannot say that what I do is not rewarding at the end of the day because my actions throughout the day touch lives.

Today one act of kindness truly touched my life. It’s the little things that count. Today a woman told me God is going to bless me simply from listening to her just vent about  her current life situation and the things she regretted throughout her life. I didn’t judge her. I just listened. Sometimes it is just nice to have someone listen to you. I mean really listen to you. So, I let her borrow my ears.

It’s just nice to meet kind souls. Yes, I thought this was news worthy. So, here is the blog post.
