Benefits of Diversity in the Workplace and Education

Businesses and academic institutions need to improve diversity to ensure that people of all socioeconomic backgrounds, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and genders are represented. Improving diversity not only has a positive impact on the organization, but also on individuals and their wider communities.

President Barack Obama noted in a 2016 presidential memorandum, “Research has shown that diverse groups are more effective at problem solving than homogenous groups, and policies that promote diversity and inclusion will enhance our ability to draw from the broadest possible pool of talent, solve our toughest challenges, maximize employee engagement and innovation, and lead by example by setting a high standard for providing access to opportunity to all segments of our society.”

As Obama highlights, it’s clear that diversity has measurable benefits, including:

Increased creativity and innovation: A wide range of perspectives can lead to better solutions.

Improved understanding of value sets: A more diverse group of professionals will have a better understanding of colleagues’ and clients’ different belief systems.

More effective problem-solving: Different people have different backgrounds and experiences to draw on.

Enhanced communication: People who speak the same language or otherwise share similar backgrounds, may be able to communicate more effectively.

Boosted employee engagement and retention: People take pride in working for companies that are making a positive impact.

It’s critical that organizations increase representation in healthcare in order to improve employee and student engagement and build stronger communities. Additionally, the majority of employees (57%) want their employers to improve diversity and about 9 in 10 believe their organization needs to do more to increase representation.

In order to increase diversity companies can take the following steps:

  • Commit to diversity: Evidence suggests that institutional commitment to diversity leads to fewer reports of discrimination and bias.
  • Increase access to education: Everyone should have equal opportunity to get a quality education. Increased access to educational opportunities also aids people in earning more over their lifetime.
  • Build an inclusive environment: Prove to employees, students, and customers, as well as the community at large, that diversity is a core value of the organization.
  • Create a mentoring program: Help people learn to best navigate academic and professional environments as well as to feel supported.

The visual below from the University of St. Augustine shares additional information about the importance of promoting diversity and ways to increase representation.

Ferguson: I am Going To Say What The President Cannot Say

The events in Ferguson are a reminder that Americans are  deeply divided. Today President Obama had a press conference about the events in Ferguson, but he didn’t say much. Some are hurt or disappointed that his speech about Ferguson is not bold nor directly focused on racial tension in America, but President Obama has good reason not to say much. When President Obama takes sides on racially charged controversies, it causes a massive divide in the United States.

The article by Vox.com called ‘Why Obama won’t give the Ferguson speech his supporters want‘ offers a good explanation for President Obama’s silence. There is a state of emergency in Ferguson but  people shouldn’t only be outraged for a white cop killing a Black man. People should also be outraged for the number of killings within the Black community by Black people.

Be outraged about the killing of 1 Black man. It’s your right but you need to also be outraged about the excessive violence in the Black community and the overall violence in America.

There is no secret. Black life in America is not valued, not by the masses nor by the Black community. Instead of looting and rioting, how can we increase the value of Black life in America? The answer to this question will lower racial tension in America and improve quality of life not just for Black Americans but also all Americans.

I truly believe strong nuclear families, quality education, and entrepreneurship can reduce violence in America, particularly Black violence. In the Black community all three elements are lacking. Strong nuclear families can keep Black youth off the streets and out of trouble. The drug lords wouldn’t be the ones with power. It would be the community village with the power. Quality education could break the chains of poverty-stricken, crime ridden communities. Entrepreneurship could help future generations thrive.

Safe communities; respected communities. Unified communities are powerful communities. If we want to make Black men &  women more valuable to society, we need to play the part. We cannot expect society to value our lives, if we cannot value ourselves or keep up safe communities.

No, Michael Brown did not deserve his untimely death. No youth deserves a violent death in a community they call home. How can we be proud to live in a world where it’s okay to kill and ask questions later? We cannot.

I urge you to take a stand. Stop destroying your communities and say you are doing it for Michael Brown. Build them up. Show society we are valuable because we value ourselves. We need fathers. We need mothers. We need community.

Keep the peace but also voice your opinions and do positive actions in the name of Black youth gone too soon. Standing together is the only way to effectively prove high worth. Don’t take no for an answer. It’s not okay.

We are stronger than oppressive authority and it’s time to prove that with self-respect. Show the world with positive images and positive actions.

Black is valuable.

President Obama Pumping Iron in Poland: Obama’s Workout Playlist

Spotted: President Obama getting his Let’s Move workout in! Some creepy person at the gym recorded him and the world is watching.  Here is my real question: What music is on President Obama’s workout playlist? Watch the video below:

Here are some songs I believe President Obama might be listening to:

  • My First Song by Jay-Z ( while lifting weights and doing cardio).

  • Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones ( President Obama is  a big fan of the Rolling Stones. Heck, who isn’t?).

  • Brooklyn in the House ( haha )!

Bulletin Points from President Obama’s 2012 State of the Union Address

Economic fairness was the theme for tonight’s State of The Union Address. Here are just a few key points from the speech:

  •  President Obama: Our oldest alliances in Europe and Asia are stronger than ever. Our ties to the Americas are deeper.
  • If you make more than $1 million a year, you should not pay less than 30% in taxes’ – President Obama
  • The most immediate priority is stopping a tax hike on 160 million working Americans while the recovery is still fragile.
  • President Obama proposes generating clean energy to power 3 million homes on public lands.
  • If you’re a business that wants to outsource jobs, you shouldn’t get a tax deduction for doing it.
  • President Obama to call on states to raise dropout age to 18.
  • President Obama is for women rights to equal pay for equal work.
  •  Today General Motors is back on top as the world’s number 1 automaker.
  • Train 2 million Americans that will lead directly to a job.
  • Hold Wall Street accountable, so a crisis like this never happens again.
I thought the speech was direct, strong, passionate and organized. I hope these initiatives will be acted on this year and beyond. What are your opinions on the speech?

President Obama Signs NDAA

strongBy/strong strongBriana/strong strongBooker/strong NDAA, the National Defense Authorization Act was passed the last day of 2011 by President Obama for the 2012 fiscal year. It means anyone seen as a terrorist suspect can be held indefinitely and without trial. I have mixed feeling about the act because I feel it is an invasion on freedom. Yes, perhaps safety might increase but who and what is a terrorist. A terrorist can come in any shape or form. If you are a terrorist suspect on American soil, you may not get a trial at all. What happens if you are not guilty at all? You can be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Anyone can go to jail. Think about it. strongUpdate/strong : President still allows American Citizens planning or in coalitions suspected of terrorism to have a trial. Everyone else, good luck. Congress wanted a harsher defense bill but President Obama signed NDAA.

Fromgirltogirl to Attend White House Tweetup: Arrival of President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea

Fromgirltogirl to attend the State Visit of President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea

By Briana Booker

Fromgirltogirl is excited and honored to attend, on October 13,2011, the State Visit of President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea at the White House, in which President Obama will be hosting.

The State Visit will highlight the strong alliance, global partnership and deep economic ties between the United States of America and the Republic of Korea.

The State Visit ceremony tradition started during the Kennedy Administration. The purpose of the State Visit is to formally welcome a visiting head of state to the United States of America.

The arrival ceremony for the Republic of Korea will be the largest White House Tweetup thus far because the Republic of Korea is one of the most wired nations in the world!

But what exactly is a tweetup?

A tweetup as defined by Macmillan Dicitionary is an “organized or impromptu ‘meeting’ between people who use Twitter. A tweetup can be an ad-hoc, face-to-face encounter between two people, but more often describes a wider social gathering, promoted and organized on Twitter itself. As well as a chance to satisfy our natural curiosity –a tweetup can also be a useful opportunity to participate in what is now sometimes described as offline networking, a chance to meet people who might be useful contacts for developing your career, business interests, or even favorite hobbies and leisure pursuits.”

Fromgirltogirl looks forward to the event! We will be posting pictures and writing about our adventures!

Stay tuned!
