A new report on America’s tipping habits in 2022 reveals 1 in 5 Americans are tipping less due to inflation. With the holidays drawing closer and inflation on the rise, tips remain a point of confusion in public life.

86% of Americans consider themselves good tippers, while 17% don’t
tip at sit-down restaurants.
1 in 3 Gen Z and Millennials tip regardless of good or bad service, while
Gen X and Boomers judge their tips on service.
52% of Americans have worked in the service industry.
This year, 23% of Americans plan to tip more during the holidays, and 45%
have been tipping more over the past few years due to a rise in businesses
asking at checkout.

This new report surveyed Americans nationwide about their 2022 tipping
habits.
· 95% of Baby Boomers tip, compared to 84% of both Gen X and Millennials
and 74% of Zoomers.
· 1 in 3 Americans tip regardless of good or bad service – 68% base their
tip on service.
· Over half of Americans feel pressure to tip when prompted by an iPad at
checkout.
· Only 39% of Americans tip at coffee shops, and are less likely to do so
at chains such as Starbucks.
How much are Americans tipping?
- At sit-down restaurants: 64% of Americans tip 20% or higher.
- Due to inflation: 17% of Americans are tipping less.
- During the holidays: 23% plan to tip more this year.
- Since the pandemic: 26% say they have tipped more.
