3 Tips for Dressing up as a Fairy this Halloween

Girl wears fairy costume

While there is no such thing as pixie or fairy dust, many children find that all types of magic are possible when dressing up in a fairy costume.  When the dressing up begins, the child (let’s use a girl as an example) will likely swirl and twirl about in the sparkling costume all day long.  This article will provide some dress-up theme ideas, along with fairy costume ideas to send your daughter off on her fairy adventure.

Fairy costumes are available in a plethora of colors and styles meaning all girls can find their perfect type of fairy costume to take her on a fairy adventure.  For instance, fluttering butterfly fairies with shiny woodland sprites look suited to enchanted forests.  Of course, a trip to the backyard or park can be as magical as an enchanted forest.

In addition to basic fairy costumes, there are several famous fairy characters available.  After all, Cinderella had a fairy godmother helping her transform from a ragged servant to a glamorous princess.

#1:  Tinkerbell Costumes With Dress-Up Tips

It is impossible to speak about fairies without mentioning the famous Tinkerbell.  Tinkerbell is a Pixie Hollow native who has been around for centuries before meeting up with Peter Pan; however, the Peter Pan film by Disney is her most well-known appearance.  Since the film, Tinkerbell has become a mascot for the Disney establishment.  The green fairy costume is iconic and girls wanting to channel their inner fairy will use this idea.

Of course, Tinkerbell hasn’t stuck to the traditional green dress changing with the trends and wearing more modern costumes.  To make a Tinkerbell costume more magical than it already is, you can add accessories like tiaras or a wand.  The accessories can also be used with a pair of wings to produce a DIY Tinkerbell outfit.  Pair the accessories with light green or pastel clothing to create a unique fairy costume for your daughter.

#2:  The Pirate Fairy With Tinkerbell

In our previous article we discussed pirate costumes as a dress-up idea.  Tinkerbell is as significant being completely unique.  In the film The Pirate Fairy (also by Disney), Tinkerbell and her friend Zarina take on the roles of pirate pixies.  In fact, they even try to take on Captain Hook!  Not only are Zarina and Tinkerbell magical in the film, but they are also mighty taking on bad guys that are more than twice their size.  Did they flinch? Not at all!

Just as Zarina and Tinkerbell are the ideal combination of fairies with pirates, dressing up as a pirate fairy involves a mixture of both themes.  The layered green skirt from Tinkerbell, as is seen in the Peter Pan film, is combined with a crushed velvet top.  Lace and frills make it appear to be a real pirate outfit, but with some more green and pink.  In contrast, Zarina is far more pirate than pixie when it comes to dressing.  Using a shimmering purple and burgundy satin fabric with some golden enhancements, Zarina is a real pirate fairy.  Each of the fairies have a signature pirate sword along with a matching pair of silver fairy wings.

Tinkerbell and Zarina pirate pixie outfits can be worn along with several types of accessories, such as glittering pirate treasure.  After all, a pirate fairy can’t be a pirate with some gold.  The gold costume accessories are the best option for this theme.  Bracelets, belts and earrings are available using faux gold, which is ideal for a pirate pixie.  Speaking of the earrings, gold hoop earrings can be a fantastic addition to the costume.  You should also consider a purse for the fairy to hold her fairy dust and plunder.

#3:  The DIY Fairy Costume

If your daughter has a vast imagination and wants to create an original fairy outfit, then allow her to do this with DIY dress-up options.  It is simple to turn any outfit into a fairy costume – all you need is a pair of wings!  The clothes and costume are already in her wardrobe, all you need are some accessories.  A princess costume remaining from a birthday party or Halloween can be reused as part of the fairy costume.

Another easy combination of clothing resulting in an instant fairy costume is the white fluffy tutu.  Tutus are available in a plethora of colors ranging from multi-coloured rainbows to a white snowflake.  Allow your daughter to be any type of fairy she wishes using these DIY methods.  A frozen winter fairy may choose icy blue, and a woodland fairy may opt for green – the choice is hers!

In addition to clothing, all fairies need fairy-like accessories.  Magic wands are essential to help spread fairy dust. Check out wands from premierglow.com.  Your daughter can also use sequined shoes and a tiara to sparkle from her head to toe.  There is one rule to adhere to when dressing up as a fairy – there needs to be some form of glitter!  Affixing some faux jewels, decoupage flue or dustings of glitter can help achieve this effect.
