April is an unpredictable weather month, but it’s never too early to prepare for the warm weather months. Throughout April, the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch-AFHSB will be hosting a Facebook Q & A and Twitter chat on April 20th, 12-1pm EST, to help service members and the public beat the heat before it beats them. Every year heat-related injuries expose people to significant health threats because of the combination of scorching temperatures, physical activity, fluid loss and heat fatigue. Yes, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses are  all serious health threats. Join us and AFHSB to spread awareness about heat injury prevention by participating in the highly interactive chats including trivia games, video coverage and animated infographs. All you have to do is follow AFHSB on Twitter and Facebook to take part in all the awesome activities.

On Wednesday, April 20th from 12-1 p.m. EST, AFHSB will publish answers to the Facebook Q&A and host a live ‪#‎heatinjury‬ awareness chat on Twitter that provides valuable ‪#‎heatsafety‬ tips.

To take part in the Facebook Q&A, submit questions by end of day Wednesday April 13th to AFHSB’s Facebook inbox or leave comments using the hashtag ‪#‎BeatTheHeat‬. To join the Twitter Chat, follow and reply to them via @AFHSBPAGE and hashtag your tweets with #BeatTheHeat. Spread the word and save the date to join the conversation today. We want to know all the ways you know how to beat the heat.

UPDATE: below are the heat injury prevention FB Q&A and the twitter chat recap.

World Water Day: How to save water while brushing your teeth

Colgate Every Drop Counts save water campaign
#EveryDropCounts to save water and planet Earth

Today is World Water Day and more than ever people around the world need to find better ways to save water. To support the cause Colgate, American workers as well as families are encouraging others to save water by turning off the faucet while brushing their teeth. Water is one of life’s most basic needs, yet it’s essential to our survival. In many regions of the world, water is an increasingly scarce resource.

The fact is Americans who leave the water running while brushing their teeth waste up to four gallons of water. This is why Colgate developed a “Save Water” campaign to remind people who every drop counts. Since 2005, Colgate has saved enough water to fill 7,300 plus Olympic sized swimming pools by encouraging people to do these three easy steps:

  1. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth
  2. Make a personal pledge online to save water and help family, friends and co-workers do the same by using #EveryDropCounts to signify saving four gallons of water
  3. Spread the word to save water and make those around you aware of the importance of water conservation and encourage people to learn more information at Colgate.com/EveryDropCounts

To put it short, the small act of turning off your faucet while brushing your teeth can make a big difference in the world. We can all do our part in combating global water shortages.

As for oral hygiene, The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day. Turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth can save up to 3,000 gallons of water per year – that’s nearly 50,000 glasses of water. Use the hashtag #EveryDropCounts to show us how you save water.

Martin had a dream. Briana have a dream.

Martin Luther King had a dream. Briana has dream. The youth has a dream.
#King. #Martin had a dream. #Jesus had a dream.#Anthony had a dream. #Malcolm had a dream.#Obama has a dream. #Briana has a dream. Dream be continued. Dream be alive.
#MartinHaveADream . If you have a #dream, express and pursue that dream.
I dream of a world where #BlackLivesMatter ,a world where all people matter no matter of race, gender, age or religion.
I dream of a world where institutional racism has no power, no say. Where skin as white as snow or dark as night has no value, only  #character matters.
I dream of a world where people are no longer caged in ghettos or social caste systems. I dream of a world where the drug trade has little to no power because books of knowledge become the gateway, the ticket out of #poverty.
I dream of a world where a black mother doesn’t have to worry whether her black son fits mainstream society enough to liver past the age of 40. I dream of a  #society where jails are no longer systems of profit. I dream of a society where women and children are no longer treated like sheep or cattle for sex exploitation. I dream of a society where child rights matter.
I have a dream.

Cancer Survivors Day: Gearing Up for 2015 Ride to Conquer Cancer

Cancer Survivors Day Stories

National Cancer Survivors Week is truly a celebration of life. This week I had the opportunity to share music, food and conversation with cancer survivors, caregivers, family members, and friends to share music, food and great conversation.

If you are fighting cancer or your life has been touched by cancer in any shape or form, know that life is just as inspiring and rewarding after beating cancer.

Here are pictures from “Seeing the bigger Picture”, a free event for cancer survivors and their loved ones hosted by Johns Hopkins affiliate Suburban Hospital:

Thank you to all who attended Suburban Hospital ‘s Seeing the Bigger Picture on Thursday, a free event celebrating life…

As we celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day, I hope you will join me in sponsoring causes that help drive cancer research forward.

Please consider sponsoring Team Suburban in the September Ride to Conquer Cancer, a 2-day, 150 mile ride raising money for cancer research and care right here in our community.

In 2014, Team Suburban raised $121,672.47 for Ride to Conquer Cancer for a total of $2.6 million in the Capital Region. We hope to exceed that goal this September.

Sponsor Team Suburban today ( I will share stories, photos and videos in the upcoming weeks to give you an inside look on preparing for the Ride):
