Now playing: Daisies | Raye Robinson

Raye Robinson pictured with a Daisy in her mouth.

We are officially titling summer 2021 “we’re outside,” as we start to see the light at the end of tunnel, regarding the Coronavirus Pandemic. To get you ready for a great summer, here is Daisies by Raye Robinson who is a Los Angeles alternative pop artist. Raye Robinson is a bowl of sunshine and femininity with her new track. The song is also a reminiscent of Lily Allen meets Billie Eilish.

If you haven’t heard of Raye Robinson, she has garnered acclaim from the likes of Live Nation’s Ones to Watch and Earmilk.

Through honest songwriting and relatable themes, Raye Robinson creates a fresh and intoxicating sound, emitting an innocence and dreaminess that continues to whisk music lovers away to their own delight.

Having previously performed in bands, her time alone during the pandemic has allowed Robinson to dive into her music and self while discovering her love for taking creative control over her sound.

Produced by Rob Auerbach, out of his do-it-yourself (DIY) garage studio, Robinson’s upcoming music emits a spunky, fun, laidback and feel good vibe that is sure to become a summer favorite.

The debut single “Daisies” is the first track off of her upcoming EP entitled Crushes & Love Songs. Unsurprisingly the song is a matter of the heart, narrating her unfortunate and confusing love situation.

The songwriter confides, “I ended things with a guy that I was seeing because I was afraid to get into something serious. After we stopped seeing each other, though, I really missed the connection we had, and I couldn’t stop wondering ‘Does he miss me too? Does he hate me now? Did I make the right decision?’”

Robinson explains this sparked her thinking about the “he loves me, he loves me not,” picking petals from flowers trope. She shares “I immediately loved using the word ‘daisies’ in the hook, and from there the rest of the song came together pretty quickly!”

“Daisies” starts off with an intimate, minimalistic feel laced in tender piano hits, the track bursts to life with a bass-infused piano, soft vocals and glassy, light production. The song carries a diverse use of keys creating a soundscape of heavy and light with an almost old-school Lily Allen-esque bounce to the rhythm. The track is beaming in sunshine and femininity creating warmth to the track which radiates through its simplicity.

New Music: 40 Days by Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez

Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez

New York Jazz R&B artist Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez has a new single out. It’s entitled “40 Days.”

Who is Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez?

Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez is a singer/composer based in Brooklyn, New York. Born into a family of musicians, the love of music runs deep in her veins. Rooted in Jazz and R&B, the songwriter invites listeners into her unique sonic world with harmonic nuance and lyrical poetry.

With improvisation as a starting point for her songs, Raina draws on her emotionality and leans into her perception of the world around, articulating personal truth with vulnerability and bravery. Songwriting is Raina’s way of processing and understanding life and its complexity.

About the song 40 Days

Raina’s latest single “40 Days” is a subtly complex story about a struggle to let go due to an unhealthy attachment, “I fought for you when I knew it wasn’t right.” It’s hard to let go and it’s especially hard to let go of people who have hurt you. At the core of “40 Days” is the desire to let go and live in expansive harmony. Community, shared truth and recognition set us free.

Here at Fromgirltogirl.com we like that “40 Days” is soulful and romantic, which captivates us from start to finish as Raina’s smoky, sensual vocals glide over the soundtrack.

New Music: PinkFiz – ‘Did I Ask?’ | Female Consent and Sexual Harassment Anthem

PinkFiz photoshoot

18-year-old punk-pop artist PinkFiz from Cambridgeshire has released her new single “Did I Ask?” to emphasize the importance of female consent and why we all need to do our part to end sexual harassment. The new single touches on punk/rock instrumentation, radiating a brooding bassline, fast-paced drums, and a howling lead guitar. The clashing guitars are a juxtaposition to PinkFiz’s soft, muted vocals, as she sings, “she’s not your possession.”

PinkFiz confides, “I wrote this song about the phrase “she was asking for it” because I was really angry that day about it and I needed to get all my frustration about it into words and into a song. I am very passionate about fighting for equality and about making opportunities for everyone the same. As a female guitarist, I have been overlooked in the past and disregarded and I’ve often felt invalidated and seen as not as good as my male peers. I also recalled being robbed of opportunities in school and begging for a chance to play something more technical and difficult but the parts I would ask for were always given to an older male teacher without me having a shot at trying them.”

PinkFiz represents female empowerment and the songwriters pride in being an independent female artist and producer. With the hopes to make listeners feel invincible and capable of anything, she hopes the empowering song will help listeners feel like they stomping on top of the world.

Here at Fromgirltogirl, we enjoy the catchy chorus of ‘Did I Ask?’ and appreciate the messaging of encouraging sexual consent. Although our society needs to enforce more policies and laws to protect women against sexual abuse and violence, we know we must keep the conversation going to make a better world for not only us but our future generations. We cannot stay silent.

Cybersecurity Threats – Take This Lollipop 2 | a Zoom meeting horror film

Take This Lollipop Sequel

Do you remember the 2011 viral “Take This Lollipop” horror film? Finally there is a sequel using deep fake tech, AI, all in a Zoom meeting horror setting to highlight today’s cybersecurity threats. It is worth checking out as we countdown to 2020 Halloween. The simulation works best on a desktop. Check it out at TakeThisLollipop.com.

About Take This Lollipop

In 2011, Jason Zada broke the internet with a Facebook-integrated short horror film called Take This Lollipop, which managed to frighten millions around the world to tears while showing them the real life dangers of the internet and social media in terms of data breaching and identity theft threats.
This month, Zada launched the sequel (TakeThisLollipop.com) – a Zoom-based short horror film experience that blends Deep Fakes, AI and the new normal we’re all experiencing – to bring into focus how identity theft has evolved immensely since 2011 into a much more complex and terrifying threat.

While taking in this experience, it is crucial you watch until the very end. You will know when it is over.

It’s an unpaid, original meant purely to have a little fun for Halloween, while also creating some awareness for what these technologies can be made to do, in a very shocking and mind bending way.

Fun fact: the Deep Fake art was done by the same guy who blended Jennifer Lawrence and Steve Buscemi! His name is BirbFakes
Happy Halloween!
Lollipop (verb): The act of stealing someone’s identity and transforming into them.

In 2011, the internet was introduced to Take This Lollipop, a digital film experience that asked viewers to click a button that read “connect via Facebook”. The film started, and viewers quickly learned that the story’s protagonist, a terrifying stalker, was stalking them. See a short recap, here.

The first film experience played on the very real growing concern about data security that for years had been splashed endlessly across major news headlines. Lollipop codified a collective feeling about what could happen if personal data got into a stalker’s hands.

It’s 2020. We stopped caring about data, and still use the same password everywhere. Remember all those data breaches? We don’t hear about them anymore. AI and Deep Fakes are so powerful now. Presidents, celebrities and athletes have been deep faked.

It’s easier than ever to lose your identity, much more than just your account numbers.

The pandemic has only sped things up. Our homes are visible through video calls. There’s more footage of you talking, making faces and intonations. Is anyone recording those calls?

The first Lollipop warned people of the dangers of sharing personal information online. Now we want to show the world how someone can actually become you. Take This Lollipop 2 is a short film experience that plays on the new normal, ramping up a narrative that began nine years ago, a visceral ride rooted in the headlines that have whisked down our newsfeeds since 2011.

Must Watch Movies – All In: The Fight for Democracy

United States of America flag

Today Fromgirltogirl had the opportunity to watch and review ALL IN: THE FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY, which examines the insidious issue of voter suppression in the United States. We love that the film highlights both personal experiences as well as historical insights to expose voter suppression issues while exploring options on how we can protect our democracy in the USA.

The movie also showcases expertise from Stacey Abrams, the former Minority Leader of the Georgia House of Representatives and offers an insider’s look into the laws and barriers that jeopardize fair voting for all Americans. The laws and barriers spotlighted in this film are a threat to the basic rights of citizens in the USA.

And Stacey truly Abrams shines in this film with her deliver and storytelling of voter suppression in the United States.

We recommend this film for middle schoolers, high schoolers and adults of all ages. We all also encourage grade school and higher education institutions to consider adding this film to their cirriculums.

It is so important to know American History so that we can ensure that we have the knowledge and awareness to become a better America.

America isn’t truly American without allowing fair opportunity and access to all who call the USA home or dream to call America home.

You can watch ALL IN: THE FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY on Amazon Prime Video on September 18. The movie is rated PG-13 and is 1h 43m.
