It’s October and spooky season is upon us. New research from sexual wellness brand lovehoney.com has revealed that people not only enjoy dressing up for Halloween, but also enjoy getting undressed. 29% of Americans have admitted that it’s not just birthdays and Valentine’s Day that see an increase in sex, but also Halloween. More people are celebrating Halloween by having sex and 59% of respondents claim that their spooky season sex is more adventurous.

Birthdays and Valentine’s Day are the kinkiest holidays for sex.

New research reveals that birthdays and Valentine’s Day ignite the most celebratory sex in the United States (U.S.). Valentine’s Day sparks the most adventurous sex because Americans use it as an opportunity to try new sex positions. Over 36% of Americans feel pressure to have sex around a celebratory occasion. A recent survey of over 2,000 Americans from sexual wellness brand Lovehoney.com has found that when it comes to celebratory sex, U.S. residents don’t hold back.

64% of respondents said that they’ve gotten down and dirty in the bedroom on their own birthday, 63% on their partner’s birthday, and 61% on Valentine’s Day.

Dallas, Houston and Indianapolis residents partake in Valentine’s sex the most. However, it is unanimous across the rest of the country that birthday sex is the favourite.

The survey found that the most common reason that Americans believe their sex is more adventurous on a celebration is due to:

  1. Trying new positions (35%).
  2. ‘Doing it’ for a longer period of time (45%),
  3. ‘Doing it’ multiple times throughout the day (39%). 
  4. The survey also found that as many as one in seven (13%) Amercian’s celebrate occasions by participating in a threesome to spice up their sex.
  5. 36% of Americans feel pressure to have celebration sex
  6. While a ‘birthday blowjob’ is a common occurrence, the research found that over one-third of Americans (36%) actually feel pressure to have sex and perform due to it being an occasion.
  7. For those aged 18 to 14, half (50%) of respondents within this age group have also admitted to feeling the pressure to perform on their partner’s birthday.

How to avoid feeling pressure to have celebration sex

Dr. Justin Lehmiller, social psychologist and research fellow at The Kinsey Institute, shared his advice for how you can avoid feeling pressured to have sex on a celebration, and how you can address this with your partner:

“When you start having sex out of obligation, this can decrease your future sexual desire because, odds are, the sex won’t be great. Obligatory sex can create more issues in your sex life than it solves. If sex is starting to feel obligatory in your relationship, it’s time to have a sexual check-in with your partner. What is and isn’t working for you? How can you get back to having the sex you really want?”
