Hello! My name is Swathi and I’m a 20 year old pre-medical student at American University in DC. I’m currently raising money to send myself to South Africa to provide Child Care and After School programming to children in need! I have volunteered abroad in the past on the small island of Bequia, where working with children changed my life and inspired me to go into the medical field- where I could care for others and always be of service. I hope to make a difference in South Africa and learn and grow from the experience as well. It truly will be the trip of a lifetime, and I am amazingly grateful to be able to go.

I will be spending three months in Muizenberg this summer volunteering and I would love your help! During this trip I will spend the first six months in the underprivileged community of Vrygrond working with small children and the second six weeks working with older children at an after school program that teaches them surfing and life skills. There is nothing more important than teaching, nurturing and empowering children; I am so excited to take part in this program and to explore the South African culture!

I’ve been saving for this trip for the past year, but I’m a little short, and that’s where gofundme comes in- I have been planning this trip with an organization called International Volunteer HQ, and they have provided me with a wealth of information and my placement in South Africa. However the program fees are completely self funded, including flight, travel expenses, lodging, vaccinations, etc. and while I have saved almost enough, I am still about $3,000 dollars short with only two months to spare! Every dollar counts and I truly appreciate any amount of money that you can spare. Thank you for taking your time to read this, and for supporting me on my journey to South Africa! 🙂
