SURVEY REVEALS AVERAGE AMERICAN SPENDS $722 ON APPEARANCE PER YEAR

Everyone wants to look good, and some will go to great lengths and costs to do so. Our new study shows just how much Americans are spending on beauty and wellness and what their top concerns are. For some, skincare is a priority, while others want to slow down the aging process

While certain concerns can be addressed through cosmetic procedures, people are also taking matters into their own hands. In a survey of more than 1,000 Americans, it was revealed on average, adults spend $722 every year on their appearance.

Americans Annual Beauty and Wellness Spending

While the average person spends more than $700 on their appearance per year, the spending is higher among women. The average American woman shells out $877 annually, while men pay $592 on average.

When it comes to investing in your image, people have spent the most money on hair products, followed by skincare, and shaving products in the last 12 months. Hair and skin remain a priority as seven out of the top ten expenditures revolve around these features.

When looking individually at women, the top 3 beauty investments are skincare, hair products, as well as haircuts and color.

The top investments for men slightly differ. Haircuts top the list, followed by supplements/protein powders, and gym memberships.

Beauty Products American Women and Men Spend the Most On

Despite spending nearly $1,000 per year on looks, 60% of Americans wish they had more money to use on their appearance. In fact, 1 in 6 admit to spending more on beauty and wellness than they can afford.

When comparing how much men and women spend in certain categories, women spend more than men on haircuts, makeup, skincare, hair products, and nails. On average, women spend $60 more per year on haircuts than men. When looking at skincare expenses, women spend around $28 per month, while men pay around $17. Meanwhile, men spend, on average, $18 per month on gym memberships, compared to the $11 women shell out. Men are also paying more for supplements and protein every month.

The Struggle of Self-Consciousness in America

While there are many reasons someone may want to put their best self forward, some Americans are spending so much on their appearance because of worries or insecurities. More than 2 in 3 (67%) worry about their appearance. Additionally, 3 in 4 women (75%) and 60% of men say they worry about how they look. When it comes to self confidence, 58% of the population say they struggle to feel good about themselves. Half of men and 65% of women admit having a lack of self confidence.

The struggle of self-consciousness can be rooted in many things. Weight is a top concern (63%), followed by skin quality (38%), smile/teeth (37%), hair (34%), and muscle tone/mass (25%). While many people may try on their own to improve their appearance, 1 in 3 are considering cosmetic surgery. More women (44%) than men (22%) are considering that route.

So far in their lifetime, people who have gotten cosmetic procedures have paid around $630 on average. Women have spent $1,120 on average, and men have spent much lower at $159. The most common procedures people have paid for include botox/fillers, laser hair removal, breast augmentation, and liposuction.

Cost is a consideration whether you’re buying new lotion, consulting with a dermatologist, joining a gym, which 11% of Americans plan to do in 2023. In fact, 3 in 5 Americans say inflation impacts their decision whether or not to spend money on their appearance.

More than 1 in 4 (26%) plan on spending more money on their appearance in 2023 than they did in 2022. When it comes to the holidays, 17% plan on gifting beauty and wellness products, while more than 1 in 3 (34%) hope to receive those products.

Everyone struggles at different times with their appearance. It’s important to know: You’re not alone and you are beautiful.

Experts Reveal How To Look Well Rested With No Sleep

May be an image of 1 person, tree and outdoors

We all know that a good night’s sleep is vital to looking our best and being healthy but sometimes things happen and we end up running on empty for the day.

Dark and puffy eyes and sallow skin are tell-tale signs that you have had no sleep. Whether it’s due to illness, work stress or getting up at night to look after the kids, there are ways to look fresh even after a night of poor quality sleep.

We all have had days we have spent looking exhausted. Some of us pile makeup on.

Health experts at Amerisleep share five simple and natural tricks they use to look refreshed after a bad night’s sleep.

Drink powdered magnesium, or bathe in magnesium salts.

Not getting the recommended eight hours of sleep per night can lead to higher stress levels and inflammation. This will make your eyes look puffy and your skin look tired. Magnesium is an anti-inflammatory and anti-stress mineral. Magnesium has a natural antioxidant effect which aids oxygen uptake, electrolyte balance and energy production.

Add powdered magnesium citrate to a mug of hot water and sip throughout the day. It will help to reduce tiredness and fatigue, and will also help maintain healthy bones and muscles.

If you have more time, take a quick bath with magnesium salts. The salts will soothe your tired muscles, lowering inflammation and minimizing puffiness.

Apply a Quick Coffee Scrub

Drinking coffee is typically the go-to for the sleep deprived. The caffeine may perk you up for a while, but coffee has dehydrating effects which won’t help your skin.

At Fromgirltogirl.com we drink Oaza Cold Brew because it contains electrolytes.

Instead, why not make a simple coffee face scrub?

How to make a Coffee Face Scrub

Combine a cup of ground coffee and two tablespoons of sugar it’s best to use brown sugar as it is more gentle) then add enough coconut oil and mix until the scrub feels like wet sand. Then, gently scrub your face.

The coffee and sugar both act as exfoliants, which will help to rid your skin of dullness, while the caffeine will help get rid of dark under eye circles by causing the blood vessels to constrict. The scrub will last up to two months if stored properly in an airtight container ( must be located in a cool, dry place).

Hydrate, Exfoliate, and Massage

Start by drinking 20-30 ounces, or between 2.5 and 3.75 cups, of room temperature (or slightly chilled) lemon water. Water wakes up the body, flushes out toxins, and combats puffiness. In the shower, exfoliate with a gentle scrub to get rid of dullness by making the skin look bright and dewy.

If your skin still looks puffy, lightly massage the skin while applying a serum or moisturizer. Focus on moving the lymph fluid from the center of your face towards the periphery.

Curling your eyelashes will open your eyes up even more, and a bold lip color (i.e. fuchsia or red) will brighten up your face.

Splash Cold Water, Drink Green Tea

Splash your face with ice cold water. This will brighten your complexion and tighten your skin. Around your eyes, try applying a cream with green coffee extract or rosemary, which will help to de-puff and increase circulation.

Try drinking green tea rather than your morning coffee. Coffee has no health benefits and won’t hydrate you. Green tea is packed with antioxidants and will keep you hydrated. It also contains caffeine, just not as much as coffee does.

Dab organic grapefruit essential oil on your pulse points (wrist and neck), which studies show could cause people to perceive you as looking younger and fresher.

If you wear makeup, choose foundation instead of concealer. A light layer of foundation all over is the quickest and easiest way to look alive in one step, as this will even out your skin tone.

Reduce Swelling with a Cold Compress

The eyes are usually the first signs of a fitful night, followed by the skin.

To combat dullness, exfoliate and moisturize. A skin spritzer can help to wake up your skin and keep you looking fresh. It doesn’t matter whether you use a canned water mist or one from a skincare brand. The cool liquid can feel energizing, too.

For the eyes specifically, makeup will only go so far. If you have time in the morning, apply cool cucumber slices or wet tea bags. Green or black tea is best, because the caffeine helps, especially if the tea has been in the refrigerator before applying to your eyes. This will help ease swelling and increase blood flow.

Finally, a workout can help give you a boost, although if you’re tired it might be the last thing you want to do.

The Year of The Weight Lifter

strongBy Briana Bookerv/strong I came to the realization that I am no longer 17 years old. My body is not as fast as it use to be. My body is not as slim as it use to be. But here I stand as the best woman I have ever been thus far. I guess it is true, looks are not everything. Although I am aging, I still want to keep up my health and appearance. I will never be someone that settles for letting myself go. I love myself. With that said, I would like to push myself to be better than my previous self by dedicating a few hours weekly to weight lifting. I am working on my core, which I notice is not as fit as it use to be. The love of my life ( or I would like to think he is the love of my life) thinks my new found curves are beautiful but I want the 17 year old me to travel with the wonderful woman I am becoming now. Who knows, I might just surpass the 17 year old me. I am up for the challenge. Stay tuned.
