Support Higher Achievement’s Going Places 2022

Remember when you were in middle school? It is awkward and confusing time for many. It has its good and bad moments. While some of us may want to forget it, the non-profit Higher Achievement believes Middle school is an exciting time of growth for teens to dreams, gain sense of self develop and begin to shape their career paths. Thousands of talented young people in the DMV region are living this pivotal time, but too many lack access to opportunities to help them thrive. With community leadership and your partnership, Higher Achievement is able to step in to fill those gaps.

Become a sponsor of Going Places 2022, or donate to support the critical work of Higher Achievement. In America, the greatest decline in reading and math scores in more than 30 years has happened within the last two years of the pandemic.

One of the most important factors in recovering from this learning loss is extra hours of instruction and academic support. Higher Achievement is working to be part of the academic solution, in support of social-emotional learning and high school readiness.

Help Higher Achievement’s scholars on their journey towards success in high school and beyond by attending Going Places 2022, on November 2 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, or by making your commitment of sponsorship by October 14.

Higher Achievement’s evidence-based program model prepares scholars academically and socially for high school, college, and careers. During their formative years at Higher Achievement, scholars:

  • Explore their interests
  • Define and pursue their goals for the future
  • Sharpen their communication skills
  • With the help of mentors, staff, and peers.

Higher Achievement scholars have futures as educators, entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, and lawyers. No matter their path, scholars leave Higher Achievement well-prepared for placement in college preparatory high schools that will enable them to pursue their ambitions. This fall, Higher Achievement alumni are attending excellent schools throughout the metropolitan area, including School Without Walls, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, and Alexandria City High School.

How to Choose a New Career Path as a Stay-at-Home Mom

Mom working from home with her baby

As the COVID-19 pandemic sends more of the professional world into a digital reality each day, moms across the country are finding themselves ready to break back into the workforce. The ability to bring in some extra income from the comfort of your own home is an exciting opportunity, but deciding which career path best suits you can be challenging. An important first step in this decision is identifying where your skills and interests lie and matching those with compatible careers

Detail-Oriented Jobs

Are you someone who pays razor-sharp attention to detail and enjoys routine in your career? These types of jobs require a logical mindset and are best suited for people who enjoy following a concrete procedure to complete a task. Those who excel in math and science often have great data collection and interpretation skills, which are essential for data-centered jobs and programmers.

Detail-oriented jobs are also great if you live a very organized life. If you’re the type of person who plans out your week with an agenda or color coordinates your closet, you may do well as a bookkeeper or a paralegal. Most of these jobs do not require a ton of prior experience or education in the field, and those that do are well within reach through community college and online classes. Plus, the digital nature of most detail-oriented work allows you to advance your career from home while still being there for your kids.

If you’re looking to maintain a sense of structure in your life, that may feel fleeting with the pressures of motherhood, you should look into career options that are similar to the following:

  • Freelance Programming
  • Editing/Proofreading
  • Bookkeeping
  • Transcribing/Translation
  • Data Entry
  • Accountant Clerking

Creative Jobs

Those going back to work who prefer to move at their own pace and apply their unique abilities to a career, might benefit more from heading in a creative direction. These types of jobs are typically better suited for people who are more oriented towards arts and humanities, rather than STEM-related fields.

For example, if you have a passion for graphic design, you can work as a freelance designer and help people spruce up their websites and ad campaigns. Maybe you’re a woman who wants to write about her experiences with motherhood and share tips and suggestions with other mothers or parents. You can start your own blog and make money from revenue. For those with a crafty talent, such as sewing or crocheting, you can spend your time perfecting handmade crafts and starting a business selling them online.

If you love interacting with others in an online setting and creating digital content, just about every business and public figure nowadays needs a social media manager to help curate their feeds on social networks.

Whether your hobbies are digital or non-digital, you can use internet resources and platforms to generate income while doing what you love and still being mother of the year at home. If you see yourself as more geared towards creative work, anything related to the following stay-at-home jobs is well worth looking into:

  • Photography
  • Graphic Design
  • Marketing
  • Blogging
  • Freelance Art
  • Crafting

Going back to work as a mother may be intimidating, but it’s incredibly rewarding and commendable. With accessible workplaces becoming more available yearly, the opportunities to turn what you love into a career are endless. Briana Fierce: Why I Became A Writer.

Discovering me...one day at a time.

By Briana Booker

I have chosen Broadcast Journalism as a career because I have a passion for uncovering injustice, promoting positive Global/social change and chasing down crucial stories that the community needs to be informed about to empower itself. This is why I decided to major in International Studies. I wanted to be informed about a variety of cross-cultural communications so I could relate to people of all walks of life. There is something remarkable about Journalism, just like music, a media story can connect people all over the world and change the world- in one headline, one vision, or one statement. This is possible more than ever with the online media platform. It is extraordinary.

There is something beautiful about human truth that broadcast journalism can reveal and capture. It honestly captures the essence of life, the human experience. The sorrow is captured. The joy is captured. The determination is captured. The drive is captured. This is life. I thrive on that type of atmosphere. Journalism is an investment to society that spreads information and helps leaders of today and builds leaders of tomorrow. Journalism is an insightful look into the world we live within.  Journalism opens up a medium for discussion of tough topics such as wars on complexion by spreading the word on documentaries such as Dark Girls, the struggle to revive a community broken by self-hatred and mutilation.  I want to be part of this revival of humanity, this movement to a new world order of prosperity through the spread of democracy and quality of life. This is why I have chosen to pursue a career in Broadcast Journalism.

Fromgirltogirl to Attend White House Tweetup: Arrival of President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea

Fromgirltogirl to attend the State Visit of President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea

By Briana Booker

Fromgirltogirl is excited and honored to attend, on October 13,2011, the State Visit of President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea at the White House, in which President Obama will be hosting.

The State Visit will highlight the strong alliance, global partnership and deep economic ties between the United States of America and the Republic of Korea.

The State Visit ceremony tradition started during the Kennedy Administration. The purpose of the State Visit is to formally welcome a visiting head of state to the United States of America.

The arrival ceremony for the Republic of Korea will be the largest White House Tweetup thus far because the Republic of Korea is one of the most wired nations in the world!

But what exactly is a tweetup?

A tweetup as defined by Macmillan Dicitionary is an “organized or impromptu ‘meeting’ between people who use Twitter. A tweetup can be an ad-hoc, face-to-face encounter between two people, but more often describes a wider social gathering, promoted and organized on Twitter itself. As well as a chance to satisfy our natural curiosity –a tweetup can also be a useful opportunity to participate in what is now sometimes described as offline networking, a chance to meet people who might be useful contacts for developing your career, business interests, or even favorite hobbies and leisure pursuits.”

Fromgirltogirl looks forward to the event! We will be posting pictures and writing about our adventures!

Stay tuned!
