2023 Relational New Year’s Resolutions

2023 is a time to leave 2022 in the rearview mirror and begin again, and that is what many Americans are hoping to do. Nearly 4 in 5 (78%) are trying to set healthy boundaries in 2023.

The top interpersonal New Year’s resolutions is prioritizing self-care, saying no, making time for self, spending time with others, and limiting time on social media.

Other resolutions Americans are setting for 2023 focus on mental health. 1 in 4 (24%) are planning to skip or leave commitments earlier in the new year, and 1 in 6 (16%) are not planning to work overtime or off the clock.

Some are turning to others for help with nearly 1 in 3 (32%) planning to go to therapy in 2023. 38% women compared to 24% men are planning to do that. Generation-wise, younger generations are turning to therapy the most. 40% of Gen Zers and 35% of Millennials are planning to get therapy in 2023. Separately, only 26% of Gen Xers are planning on it and 15% of Baby Boomers are looking into it.

The new year is a time to start over. If you are feeling boxed into doing things you do not want to do, do not continue the cycle. Now more than ever is the time to prioritize your mental health and your happiness. At the end of the day, that’s what is the important.

Methodology

In October 2022,  Thriving Center of Psychology surveyed 1,001 people to learn about their relationships and how they set or do not set boundaries. 49% were men, 48% women, 2% nonbinary, and 1% transgender. Respondents ranged in age from 18 to 79 with an average age of 37. 18% were Gen Z, 50% Millennials, 22% Gen X, and 10% Baby Boomers.

[Study] Half of Americans Say Their Dream Home is “Unattainable”

Florida dream home.
Home ownership across generations by the numbers
While the real estate market seems to be cooling a bit, skyrocketing mortgage rates are driving affordability to the lowest level since the 1980s. Americans are taking notice and realizing their dream home may never be in the cards. I wanted to make sure you saw the report I sent last week on American’s dream homes.

More than 1,000 Americans across each generation were surveyed. The study found 90% believe owning a home is part of the American dream but 51% say it isn’t attainable.

Still, renters are hopeful they will get into a home soon. The report includes generational insights on what people are looking for in their ideal home and how many wish to own a vacation home.

If you close your eyes and picture your dream home, does it look similar to where you’re currently living?

For the overwhelming majority, that dream home is just a dream.

IPX1031 surveyed more than 1,000 Americans across each generation about their dream homes. 94% said they are not currently living in their dream home, with the top reason being they cannot afford it.

What would those dream homes look like? Where are the dream homes located? How much would the dream homes cost?

The study found…
 – Modern was the top architecture and interior design style
– 57% prefer new construction over renovating a home
– 35% want four beds
– 38% want 3 baths

The most desired dream home features…
1. A view
2. Big backyard
3. A Large family room
4. Front porch

The top luxury amenities people are looking for are land and privacy (59%), a hobby room (48%), and a home theater (42%).

51% said their dream home is out of reach, with half of millennials estimating their dream home would cost between $500,000 to over a million dollars.

Take a look at the full report, which also includes generational insights on what people are looking for in their ideal home, how many renters plan to become homeowners in the next five years, and which generation wants to own a vacation home.

What is on the drink menu for millennials in the New Year?

Millennial favorite drinks

New Year’s Eve is only days away but what is on the drink menu? Millennials are great consumers for alcohol corporations, distinguishing their varying tastes and preferences. In fact, millennials make up 30% of the total consumer product dollars that will be spent by 2020  because there are 77 million millennials ( and growing). What do millennials value? They value experience and authenticity; and when purchasing alcohol, it is no different. Additionally, they research brands online, read blog recommendations and taste test in-store to make the best decisions for their taste buds.

Millennials 21-34 represent about one-fourth of adults 21 and over, but they account for 35% of U.S. beer consumption and 32% of spirit consumption. Comparatively, they represent only 20% of wine consumption. Bottom line: they are open to trying different types of alcohol and exploring unique settings for an interesting customer experience. Learn about the types of alcohol millennials prefer drinking when spending time with friends.

New tech platform ‘Mindsail’ makes mental wellness accessible

mental-health-app-mindsail
Mindsail is a platform to discover original content from top thought-leaders and experts across relationship, career, anxiety, sleep, addiction and more.

Mindsail officially launches with iOS app featuring over 800 sessions with advice to discuss stress, career, sleeplessness, relationships, happiness and more. As a mobile resource, people can use Mindsail to change their behaviors and reach a higher level of personal achievement. How does  Mindsail work? The platform discovers original programs and content from top experts across relationships, career, anxiety, sleep, addiction and more. The app offers a curated, easy-to-navigate collection of multi-step programs and single-serve Moodboosts to help people tackle whatever it is that is emotionally weighing them down.

The company is targeting millennials, who are known for many things: they’ve been dubbed the ‘me’ generation; they’re entrepreneurial and independent; technologically adept; and, having come of age in the era of the quantified self, they’re very in-tune with themselves. Millennials are also the most stressed out generation, having unprecedented levels of  work dissatisfaction and high anxiety. Knowing this information about millennials, Mindsail goal is to be the go-to destination for people to seek help and manage their emotions while cultivating new skills to navigate the challenges of everyday life.

“Mindsail aims to discuss a growing range of mental wellness issues that prevent many of us from moving forward in our lives. We want to redefine the way people approach personal growth by taking away the stigma and barriers that surround most self-help methods” said co-founder and COO Elyse Colen.

The self-help industry is a  $10B market in the U.S. alone, as most self-help options are very expensive. “Self-help is tied to an idea that you’re damaged or weak. The reality is that everyone can improve in some aspect of their life. Many people feel held back by emotions they either can’t express to friends or co-workers, or they can’t find solutions to overcome them,” said co-founder and CEO Lauren Wallack. “We want to flip the self-help industry on its head and offer a self-serve platform to feed your appetite for personal growth.”

When using the Mindsail app, users have access to dozens of mental wellness sources, choosing the content that resonates most with the user, for a fraction of the price.  And for those wanting a more personal connection with the experts, users can send questions to be answered by an expert of their choice. With Mindsail, you can take advantage of this opportunity and use their constant presence to improve your emotional well-being. The company wants to get users emotionally fit the same way fitness apps and technology have opened us up to improving our physical health and wellness.

Having seen the way technology has transformed almost every other industry from retail to media, the founders knew there had to be a better way for people to seek personal growth options. “We’ve seen so many of our friends and peers struggling with the same issues – they want to find more meaning in their jobs, they want to have better relationships or simply be happier” said Colen. “Through technology, we’re now able to offer unprecedented direct access to new perspectives and tools that can transform your life, without being mediated by a middleman.” Here are some of the many features Mindsail as has to offer:
