Newseum Panel Discussion for Hope & Fury documentary May 2018

Briana Booker at the Hope and Fury MLK The Movement and The Media Panel discussion at the Newseum in DC

If you are searching for an excellent documentary to watch, Fromgirltogirl highly recommends watching the documentary Hope & Fury: MLK, The Movement and The Media, which explores how Dr. Martin Luther King , Jr. used the media to awaken America about the injustice of racial inequality. The documentary was released to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King in Memphis. To us, the documentary more even more relevant today as we notice reoccurring shame and injustice of racial inequality in our everyday lives, businesses, and politics.

Yes, it is frightening but this documentary gives us hope that we can overcome the inequality we are experiencing now. We hope in the long-run this documentary reaches all levels of academic settings, particularly secondary schooling, colleges, and universities as these are the spaces where we mold the philosophies of young minds, and future leaders.

As children, we didn’t hear or see much in educational spaces about the civil rights movement and era. Often, this history topic was no where available in affluent, predominately white schools. That needs to change because empathy needs to be taught to prevent shame and injustice of racial inequality in America and worldwide. If young people are not exposed to this history, how will they know how to combat racial inequality and develop a better society? They will not.

We feel it is one of the many reasons we are still seeing black lives devalued and racists leadership or authority figures managing our government, community police, businesses, and even our educational institutions. Something has to change and something has to give to heal America of its brutal pass of racial inequality, injustice, and violence.
