The perils of social media in society

Guest post by Cassie Steele

Two women take a selfie for social media.

Do you know nearly 73 percent of women in America have an active social media profile?  There are also almost 40% of women worldwide claiming to use social media for three or more hours a day. While these statistics indicate the impact social media has on our society, the data also illustrates the accessibility of social media. In today’s climate, social media impacts communication, propaganda, and censorship. Here is why:

A Vast Information System

Social media is a tool that allows people all over the world to share information and ideas. With the estimated social media users expected to surpass 3 billion by 2020. That means most of our planet will have the capability to communicate and interact with each other without having to talk face to face. This accessibility to other ears and eyes can cause a dangerous dynamic. Posting personal information, photos of yourself, and displaying your interests can all leave you vulnerable to the public. On social media, you never quite know who is watching. Posting sensitive material should be thought through carefully.

Self-worth And The Public

Posting pictures and updates about your life on social media can have its dangers. Posting this content and viewing the same from millions of others can push you to compare your physical appearance, life accomplishments, and digital popularity with people all across the world. This can steer you to attach your value and self-worth to meaningless likes and clicks. Camera and filter technologies on these social media platforms allow you to portray yourself as someone you are not, further developing issues with confidence and self-worth. Even more maliciously, social media allows users to hide behind a computer; perpetuating a lack of care for others. False rumors, fake accusations/edited pictures can take false information and spew it out to millions at once.

Getting Lost in Social Media

Even though social media connects you to the world, it can also suck you into its own. Social media can be a black hole of your interests, passions, and desires; it can be easy to lose yourself within a platform and look up 4 hours later confused as to how time flew by so fast. If you shut yourself off from the outside world, your real social skills can suffer, along with your relationships, including time with loved ones and friends. Just like any entertainment platform, make sure to curb the time you spend shopping and communicating online in order to do these things in real life.

Watch Your Back On Social Media

Social media is an amazing system that can connect all of us, however, it does have its perils. The nature of its vastness makes you vulnerable when you post sensitive and personal information. Posting this content can force you to rely on social media and the online community for your feelings of self-worth and acceptance. By being cognizant of these dangers as well as reducing your time on social media as a whole, you can be happy knowing you are prepared to fight back against the perils of social media.

The Benefits of Hiring a Virtual Social Media Assistant – Briana Booker

Chicago Social Media Contractor / DC Social Media Contractor
For information on Briana Booker’s Social Media Contractor Services, connect on Linkedin!

Are you searching for ways to generate more profitability for your business? If yes, you have to focus on two primary factors: generating revenue and reducing business costs. Many companies rely on generating sales to boost up business profitability but cutting costs while maintaining high quality service can help your company truly succeed.

One way you can carry out business success is to hire independent contractors. My name is Briana Booker and I am an independent Social Media Contractor. I offer digital marketing services to the public as well as government entities.

As a business owner, you can hire contract workers to do essential tasks for your company to cut the costs to hire full-time employees.

Here are the main benefits of hiring Independent contractors for your digital marketing efforts:

  1. You won’t have to pay taxes related to hiring employees. Every time you hire a new employee, you have to pay payroll taxes to go towards that employee’s Social Security and Medicare. On average an employer is responsible for paying 6.2% of any employee’s salary up to $106,800 simply for Social Security. With independent  social media contractors, they are responsible for paying self-employment taxes. That means you are not required to pay for Social Security, Medicare on any withholding taxes on behalf of the independent social media contractors.
  2. Job benefits are not a need. You don’t have to offer paid vacation time, retirement plans etc to independent contractors. The social media contractors are flexible so you can cut your labor costs.
  3. You can use the flexibility of social media contractors to your advantage because you will have increased flexibility during times of fluctuating demand.  When business is slow you won’t have to waste money paying full-time employee salaries. When there’s a sudden demand, you will know you’ll have high quality work and you can affordably address business demands with your social contract work. Never again will you have to worry about being understaffed during periods of high demand or have employees that are unproductive  during slow periods ( yet you’re paying the same amount to keep those employees).

Hiring an independent social media contractor is a great way to save on labor costs. I am here to offer you high quality social media contractor services. I can help you develop a custom social media package that not only meets your service needs but also helps you save more on your digital marketing efforts. Connect with me on LinkedIn and take a look at my digital marketing portfolio to see what I can offer your business today.

I offer Social Media Contracting Services nationwide, particularly Chicago, Baltimore, DC and New York. My digital marketing services are virtual but I will travel in-person to clients or have a representative from Fromgirltogirl.com come to your business for consulting services.

MEETUP use for Friendships, Connections & Tech Soars

Grab a coffee with your meetup friendships and connections, maybe you will meet up with a romantic interests.
Studies say that we all need social connections, especially during a loneliness epidemic. That desire was evidenced throughout 2022 in new data report released today by Meetup, the platform connecting people over shared interests to meet in a group setting.

2022 was a year of friendship and connections: Meetup is the first and largest platform of people seeking to meet in real life over shared interests.

Meetup, the platform that connects people who meet over a shared interest announced its most popular Meetup events of 2022. With a registered database of more than 60 million people organizing and joining in-person and live as well as online events, may be the world’s authority on people’s interests and activities based on actual behaviors of searching, joining and attending Meetup events.

In 2022, 60% out of the top ten event searches demonstrated that people were prioritizing connections, both romantic and friendly. This is a significant increase from 2021 where 30% were focused on relationships, and 20% in 2020 and 2019. The search term “friends” became the #1 most popular search term in July 2021, and remains one of the most popular search terms on Meetup today.

Since the COVID pandemic, “socializing” has become the #2 most widely attended category of events overtaking “career and networking,” which held that second spot in prior years. The category of “games” is a first-time new entry to the top ten in at #10 of most attended in 2022; up from #14 in 2021 and #13 in 2020.

Meetup’s “tech” category keeps its top honor of being the #1 most attended category for four consecutive years. This can be partially due to Meetup’s legacy and its enterprise solution, called Meetup Pro, which is used by tech companies—including Google, Adobe, Microsoft and others—to share product news with loyal customers and build brand ambassadors.

Five out of the 10 most popular individual Meetup events this past year were focused on the theme of friendships and connections, with “Meet Your Match in Real Life” and “Strategies for Ending Loneliness” being the top two most popular Meetup events. Others in this top ten list include, “The Power of Authentic Friendships,” “Finding Compatible Connections,” and “Attachment Styles Meet Friendships.”

“Meetup is trusted for building a community of people who share a common interest,” said David Siegel, CEO of Meetup.

“Since 2002, Meetup has connected extraverts and introverts—no matter of race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, or sexual orientation—to meet in a group setting over a common interest or activity, and that brings people a few steps closer to deepening their social and emotional connections.”

In stark contrast to earlier points during the pandemic, indoor events were more popular and accepted by Meetup organizers and members this year. By comparison, in 2020 seven out of 10 searches were for events that had been hosted outdoors.

About Meetup
Meetup is the social media platform for finding and building communities of people who meet about common interests. Established in 2002, the company remains true to its mission of helping people grow and achieve their personal or professional goals through authentic, human connections. Meetup has more than 60 million registered members across 330,000 groups active in 193 countries and 10,000 cities around the world.

Meet people who share your interests or try something new by downloading the Meetup app or visiting Meetup.com . To organize a Meetup group please visit Meetup here, and for enterprise solutions visit Meetup Pro. Follow Meetup on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook (@Meetup).

New Study: American’s youth lost a record $210 million to Online Scams last year learn about Online Safety

Scam alert notification image.

As kids return to school, a new study found America’s youth lost a record $210 million to online scams last year, up 2,500% since 2017.

Many adults were taught about “stranger danger” as kids and told never to get into a random van. In today’s technological world, online predators have even easier access to our children because scams that prey on young people’s insecurity and naiveté can lead to financial losses, physical harm and suicide.

“The rate at which young people are being scammed is alarming. As a father of two, I am passionate about keeping kids safe online and it is incumbent on parents to spend more time discussing online safety with their children.”

Social Catfish Co-Founder David McClellan

Social Catfish – a reverse search technology company – released a study on the State of Internet Scams 2023 using data from the FBI IC3 and FTC.

About Online Scams

Online Games and In-App Purchases Scam: Many online games and mobile apps offer in-game purchases. With one click, kids can make substantial unauthorized purchases and be tricked into sharing their parents’ credit card information because children may not fully understand spending real money in a virtual world. How to Avoid: Parents should enable parental controls to stop in-app purchases without their approval.

Romance Scams and Sextortion: Online predators target lonely teens on social media and begin ‘love bombing’ them. Teens with low self-esteem are more susceptible to falling in love. Scammers will ask for money or personal information to commit identity theft. They may ask to meet in real life which could lead to physical assault or may engage in ‘sextortion’ by requesting a sexy selfie and then threatening to release the photo if a ransom is not paid. How to Avoid: Perform a reverse image search to confirm the real identity of the person. Never send money or photos to anyone you do not know.
