About Heidi Osborne
Heidi Osborne is an American singer/songwriter, pianist, and makeup artist based in Portland, Oregon. Her latest folk pop EP is out. Heidi went to Cape Town, South Africa where she spent three months in creative migration; escaping the northern hemisphere’s winter; while working with Cosher studios’ producer Howard Edward. Travel has played a huge inuence in her music, with many of her songs storytelling of people she’s met and places she’s been.

Heidi grew up playing classical piano, while also playing and singing on many church worship teams. She studied music in college where she got her Associates Degree by the time she graduated high school. She then took wing to Australia at age 19 for two years. During that time she attended a lm school which launched her into the wonderful world of scoring for short lms, as well as dabbling into makeup artistry for lm. She decided to delve into these crafts further through an audio production course in Montana, and a makeup artistry school in Chicago.

Heidi put the music dream aside for a few years while her makeup career took off. She works professionally doing makeup for lm, commercial, print, runway, bridal, and private clients see http://heidiosborneartistry.com.

Heidi travels all over the country and world with her work, having been featured in Vogue Italia, Voyage Chicago, amongst others. Despite just beginning to taste success in the makeup industry, part of her heart never left her music. Heidi works with local musicians and producers every time she travels to input their style into her music, giving it some international are. In her EP NOMAD, you’ll hear tastes of African beats, guitar riffs and backing vocals. The album covers a journey of friendship, love, loss, people’s deep need for home, and believing that through everything in life, the struggles are only what make us stronger. Heidi hopes that through her stories people will feel empowered to believe that anything is possible.

New music: ‘Virtual’ – Arms Akimbo

Arm Akimbo photo shoot for ew music cover Virtual
It’s Friday and Fromgirltogirl has a new single, ‘Virtual’ to share with you from viral Spotify indie rock outfit Arms Akimbo. The four-piece band has found success touring with Walk The Moon, The Animals and Said The Whale.
The single ‘ Virtual’ is about social media and how our generation’s most prevalent form of communication these days is commenting. Peter Schrupp reveals, “we’re no exception to the rule. After a while you just need to reconnect. After a while you miss your friends. This song illustrates that desire to shake yourself and the people around you awake.”

About Arms Akimbo

Arms Akimbo is a maddening series of clichés that manage to form something  truly original. They met in  college and released a self-produced EP (Vignettes)  that  found  quick  success in their Los Angeles hometown. Since then, Arms Akimbo’s Peter Schrupp, Christopher Kalli, Matthew Sutton and  Colin  Boppell  have  tapped  into  that post-college-now-wtf vein of hope, insecurity and fuck it, let’s just enjoy this with their  most recent EP The Wrong Kind Of Dance Party.
The  EP  slowly exposes  us to the moments in college where  we end  up  at  the  end  of  the  night,  sitting  with our  best  friends  in the  driveway  and  wondering  what  the  point  of  life is. Whatever  it  is,  the  band  has  hit  a  nerve.  Maybe  it’s  that  never  ending  nag  that  this  time in  life  is  fleeting,  that  responsibility  is  knocking  hard  on  the  door. At the end of the day, we are living in  an increasingly unpredictable world, the only thing we can count on are good friends and the  moment.

Best of Wharf DC: Hank’s Oyster Bar

Seafood platter ice bar on the potomac

Looking for a great place in DC to explore with friends, family, or for date night?  If yes, you have to check out the Wharf DC. The transformation of the wharf is unbelievable. There is so much to do and beautifully designed.

Until my recent visit, I had not been to the Wharf DC since my college days where it was simply the wharf and pretty much a stand alone theater. Now in 2018, it’s an incredibly breathtaking place to enjoy a great view, entertainment, and eat at some really amazing restaurants.

Family entertainment area at Wharf DC

I went to Hank’s Oyster Bar on 701 Wharf Street SW Washington, DC 20024. where Chef Jamie Leeds invented urban beach food. It is right on the waterfront, offering option for both indoor and outdoor seating. Although it was a beautiful night, I went for indoor seating. It was a happening place. I recommend going to Hank’s Oyster Baar for happy hour as the restaurant has a great cocktail menu inspired by the staff’s travels. Trying out the different types of oysters and platters were fun as well.

Hank’s Oyster Bar also has lobster rolls, daily fish specials, popcorn shrimp, calamari, Ipswich clams, ceviche, and more for seafood  lovers. You have to try the Hank’s ice bar ( the photo on this post is the sampler platter I enjoyed).

Hank’s Oyster Bar Restaurant Hours

Monday-Thursday: 11:30am-12:00am

Friday: 11:30am-1:00am

Saturday: 11:00am-1:00am

Sunday: 11:00am-10:00pm

You can check out more Wharf DC restaurants today.

Parking at Wharf DC

If you are traveling by car, try to find parking in the neighborhood. Otherwise, you can park right at the waterfront, but it’s pretty pricey. We spent more than $20 for only a night visit.

If you want to impress your date, you have to come down here. Great view of the DC Waterfront and gives off all kinds of romantic feels viewing the Potomac. Not to mention, there’s an outdoor bar to give off that beach, island feel on a good weather day. Check out this list of things to do at the Wharf DC. My only regret was not researching before my visit, there is just so much to do, even for families.

Let Fromgirltogirl know how your visit goes. If you would like us to check out your restaurant or bar at the District Wharf, email us at advertise@fromgirltogirl.com.

New music: Golden Soul – Polartropica

Ladygunn of Polartropica shows off tiger umbrella
Happy new music Friday! We have a new music video for you from whimsical space pop/psych artist Polartropica entitled ‘Golden Soul.’ The single uses *J-Pop characteristics*, with shimmering dreamlike vocals to create an *electro-pop* anthem. The video details interior struggles and how, with compassion for one another and understanding our differences, there can be healing.  Polartropica has been profiled in media outlets such as Huffington Post, LA Weekly and LADYGUNN. Watch her music video ‘Golden Soul’ below:

About Polartropica

Polartropica is the music endeavor of Los Angeles based, whimsical space-pop artist, Ihui (eeway) Cherise Wu. She was born in Taiwan but raised in California. Wu successfully combines quirky pop melodies, futuristic synths, and classical string arrangements, to create a genre of bubblegum psychedelia.

Polartropica derived after Wu heard a song which couldn’t be defined by a genre – ‘Polartropic’ by Mark Foster. Admiring  the contrast between both ‘polar’ and ‘tropical’, Wu decided to formulate a place where things can exist where they don’t belong. Polartropica fuses elements of complete opposites together with the outcome resulting in a unique, ethereal sound that defies all sonic worlds. Using both organic and synthetic instruments, Wu conceived a visionary dream world for listeners to escape. It’s marvelous. Wu professes, “I wanted to create a healing, inspiring and empowering space with just the right amount of disco-party!”

Integrating 90’s pop, classical arrangements and intergalactic space-pop, Polartropica is guaranteed to feed your imagination, with eccentric and distinguished sound.

About the album Tales from a Room

Tales from a Room was recorded primarily in Nashville, with more vocal sessions in New York. All songs were written by Miriam Waks. The first track “Back to the Jungle” is an homage to artists living in New York City.

“This Room” was inspired by Virginia Woolf’s “A Room of One’s Own” while “Slave to the Song” is an ode to music whose ending features a guest appearance from Tribal Baroque – the avant-garde husband/wife musical duo Lila’Angelique & Thoth (subject of the oscar-winning documentary “Thoth”). Another literature-inspired track on the album is the homosexual love ballad “Song for Achilles” (based on Madeleine Miller’s ‘Song of Achilles’) which sees Miriam assume the mythical identity of Achilles’ lover Patroclus . The politically charged rock anthem “Revolution” speaks to our politically volatile times. “Hey! Little White Girl” is a humorous jab at her own ‘whiteness’ as well as a celebration of the African-American artists she grew up listening to.

All the album artwork is by Kristina Chan, with each song lyric in the booklet having its own illustration by Chan. These add to the whimsical, storytelling feel of the project.

About Miriam Waks

New York based Miriam Waks made her performing debut at the tender age of 10 singing solo at the Sydney Opera House. She has performed at venues and residencies across the globe including New York, Buenos Aires, France, Cuba, Edinburgh, London, Italy, Brussels, India, Macau, Hong Kong & Australia.

Tales from a Room is her first originals album and features 11 songs penned by Miriam, marking her transition from song-interpreter to song-writer. In this album, Miriam traverses a range of musical and thematic landscapes including re-interpreting the feminist writings of Virginia Woolf, assuming the mythical identity of Achille’s lover Patroclus, and playfully poking fun at her own “whiteness”.

Miriam performs with various outfits in NYC and is thankful to live in a place that nurtures the creative passion of so many artists.

New music: ‘Middle Voice’ – Kate Fenner

Kate Fenner releases her third solo album Middle Voice. Listen on Fromgirltogirl.com.

“The Yield” Kate Fenner (Official Music Video) Directed by Angelica Zollo from Angelica Zollo on Vimeo.

New York City folk singer-songwriter Kate Fenner has a new music video ‘The Yield’ and corresponding album, ‘Middle Voice’ out.

About Kate Fenner’s ‘Middle Voice’ album

The album ‘Middle Voice’ is a snapshot of mid-life and the in-between feelings we experience with love, purpose, illness, and death. It is a sweet, earned ambivalence towards life and art.

“I recorded the bed tracks for this album after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer and slated for surgery to remove it. This diagnoses itself came after a fallow period of illness and getting sober,” Fenner said.

She had started to write again, and wanted to capture her voice on tape in the event that something went awry during her surgery. Tony Scherr, Fenner’s old friend, stepped up immediately to record with her all the beds in less than three weeks in short 3-hr sessions while her son was in school. They later added overdubs and a couple newer songs, once her voice had healed.

Listen to the album “Middle Voice” on Spotify.

About ‘The Yield’ Music Video

For the music video and song’The Yield,’ Fenner pins a timeless melody to plaintive elegy- Bill Frisell’s sonic ether as twinkling stars that are just close enough to make out, while the lyric sticks us to the ground of loving, fostering and parenting. The music itself becomes parent to the prodigal voice, who has left not to wander, but to yield. Fenner documents tending to life while keeping “one eye on the city lights.” The song holds the listener on a constant pivot, with surrender and yearning in the balance.

About Kate Fenner

Kate Fenner is a Canadian musician based in New York City. The New York Times describes her vocal stylings as having a “lusty, alternative, Joni Mitchell-ish sound.”

“Middle Voice”is Fenner’s third solo album. Musical contributors to the recording include Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, Norah Jones, Chris Brown, and Tony Scherr. On the album, Fenner’s rich voice navigates ecstatic and tragic thresholds, encountering what we may keep and what we need to put down throughout life.

As the middle of three sisters, and a woman of ‘middle age’, the album locates the singer in the present tense, presuming nothing and delivering truth with unabashed maturity. Experience has yielded both wisdom and disappointment.
