New music: ‘Under Fire’ by Jessie Munro

Jessie Munro walks down dessert road during her music video Under Fire
23 year-old Toronto born, Los Angeles based artist Jessie Munro’s highly anticipated single ‘Under Fire’ is out. The music track features Munro’s soulful vocals with sleek, modern-electro R&B/pop. The song’s theme is about the pressures of social expectations and consistently feeling scrutinized by others. If you have followed the Berklee College of Music graduate from the start of her career,  you will see she has established a sound of musical maturity, drawing influences from Charlotte Day Wilson and Carole King.

Listen to ‘Under Fire by Jessica Munro

Finding her start in classical music and musical theatre, Munro is now preparing to release her debut EP ‘On My Own‘, which is a six-track release  about tackling the stages of post break-up. Here at Fromgirltogirl we like the relatable honest lyricism and beautifully poetic melodies of her music. Munro truly tells the story of living through bleak heartbreak, narrating the feeling of being alone. There is a certain kind of pain that results from unrequited love and it truly takes courage and confidence to move on. Munro describes her album as “trying to harness old school classic sounds and marry them with modern sounds.”
Leading single ‘Under Fire’ features a strong, melodic bassline that rides fluidly atop the driving drums and Munro’s soulful, dreamlike vocals. Munro reflects on how she felt she was “under fire” from everyone in her life and the song is the realization that other peoples opinions aren’t always definitive. Inspired by Lianne La Havas and her technique of fusing lyrics with melody, Munro explains “the intent of the lyric is brought to life with a melody that evokes that same emotion” and this is clearly apparent throughout the single.
Munro has come a long way from coming in sixth place in CBC’s search for Dorothy in its 2012 ‘Over the Rainbow’ series, produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Having already performed to sold out audiences across the globe, as well as receiving critical acclaim, the singer is ready for the next chapter of her musical endeavors. Can’t Cage Me feat. Kyah Baby
Pop sensation Lizzy Latimer has a new single out entitled ‘Can’t Cage Me’ featuring Kyah Baby. It is a must listen, fusing together hip-hop, rap, and afrobeat, Latimer shares her wisdom and social awareness. Here at Fromgirltogirl, we love that she is a classically trained producer and giving us a catchy and empowering tune.

“Sometimes it’s the element that most attracts a partner to you, that in the end, the partner can’t handle. You can’t clip the wings of your partner to make them stay, rather, you can improve yourself so they’ll never want to leave.
I wrote this song about scenarios I have seen many times. In the cases I’ve seen, the woman’s ambition and drive is what their boyfriend/husband was drawn to, but after some time, they keep pressuring them to basically just be a house wife.”

Musicians:
Rachel Adams: Vocals
Ritchie Williams: Vocals and Guitar
Kevin Sims: Bass
James Owen: Percussion
Styles: Indie Rock, Classic Rock, Contemporary Rock, Country Blues

About Nocturnal Blonde
“Nocturnal Blonde” was originally created as a project to bring about awareness, in story form, to mental clarity and substance abuse. After being in a project produced by Michael Stipe, Ritchie Williams of Athens, Georgia was inspired by the intuitive, concise process lead by the lead singer of Athens born R.E.M. Michael also lent assistance to Williams by co-writing and simplifying one of his songs.

Ritchie’s brother, David Williams, incurred significant neurological damage from an incidental overdose in 2017. With the education of the studio experience and the need to help the fight against the opioids epidemic, Williams initiated a production of his own. Local, veteran talents Kevin Sims (bassist) and James Owen (percussionist) were invited to join forces with Williams for the studio project and also for the cause.

The EP is compiled of material that Dave and Ritchie, brothers and best friends, collaborated on just before Dave’s mental and medical complications. They co-wrote nearly all the songs that make up the album

Williams always felt there was a fundamental, missing ingredient to get the message of his music across: a true singer. By luck, or by law of attraction, Rachel Grace was discovered as a vocalist virtuoso one month prior to the completion of the EP. Ritchie felt that the role was filled beyond expectation, and with the engineering expertise of Chris Byron of Amplify Studio and Matt Tamisin of Japanski Studio, the project took flight.

Now playing ‘Golden Soul’ by Polartropica | An opioid addiction story

New music from Polatropica is Golden Soul
Fromgirltogirl has a new single from whimsical space pop/psych artist Polartropica for you to check out entitled ‘Golden Soul.’ The track details the struggle of a friend who is now missing, after becoming addicted to opioid after being prescribed from a doctor for back pain.

About ‘Golden Soul’ by Polartropica

Polartropica (Ihui (eeway) Cherise Wu) wrote ‘Golden Soul’ watching someone close to her struggle through opioid addiction and the devastating effects it has had on the family and everyone connected.  She got a call from Ava the day Trump got elected to office, and have not seen her since.
When a trusted doctor prescribed Oxycontin for a back injury from horseback riding 10 years ago, no one would have known that it would slowly devolve into a full-on heroin addiction. Now in the news every day entire communities are destroyed by opioid addiction. On one hand, people are fighting this incredibly heartbreaking and constant internal battle, while at the same time navigating responsibilities, stigma, family, the lack of resources available for treatment, especially for those not financially able to check into a privatized comprehensive treatment facility. The relationship with an addict comes from a place of love, and morphs into a whole other form of co-dependency, and the cycle continues.

Polartropica dedicates Golden Soul to Ava and anyone with friends or family members struggling with opioid addiction. This is a nationwide epidemic that needs to be properly addressed, both in the way we view this addiction and from the pharmaceutical and lawmaking levels. Responsibility needs to be taken upon individuals and companies who are approving, making, promoting, administering opioid painkillers, and are continuing to do so, while disregarding all of the evidence we now have showing that there is a potentially dangerous outcome when prescribed carelessly.

About Ihui (eeway) Cherise Wu

Ihui (eeway) Cherise Wu was born in Taiwan and raised in California, Wu successfully combines quirky pop melodies, futuristic synths and classical string arrangements, creating a genre of bubblegum psychedelia that we’ve never heard before.

Polartropica derived after Wu heard a song which couldn’t be defined by a genre – ‘Polartropic’ by Mark Foster. Admiring  the contrast between both ‘polar’ and ‘tropical’, Wu decided to formulate a place where things can exist where they don’t belong. Polartropica fuses elements of complete opposites together with the outcome resulting in a unique, ethereal sound that defies all sonic worlds. Using both organic and synthetic instruments, Wu conceived a visionary dream world for listeners to escape to.

Integrating 90’s pop, classical arrangements and intergalactic space-pop, Polartropica is guaranteed to feed your imagination, with their eccentric and distinguished sound.

You can get and share the single now on spotify.

About Lauren Lakis

Raised in Baltimore, Lauren Lakis grew to embrace the fatalistic spirit of the city with an ever-present and fearless approach to her work and art. The hand-crafted rawness of her sound bellows deep and true, unscathed by the prevailing winds of today’s polite rock. Lakis’s persistence and growth in the Los Angeles scene attributes to her earlier bands Hobart W Fink (vocals), Slow Coda (vocals & keys), & LA Nova (vocals, keys, bass, programming).

Inspired by the challenges that life throws at us, Lakis purposely immersed herself into experiencing arduous and uncomfortable situations. Having looked up to fearless women as a child, the songstress was determined to live her life as raw, real, and unapologetic as possible.
“I always aspired to embody those qualities, to strike out on my own, boldly go where no one in my family has gone, to love harder and more passionately” reveals Lakis.
Wanting to discover what it’s like to lead the lives of as many different types of people in the world, Lakis spent nights writing poetry with junkies in abandoned warehouses, taught English in Prague, worked as both a stripper and yoga teacher in Tokyo, and helped as a mentor for kids with Autism. These challenges gave her a whole new understanding, opening her eyes and learning empathy and compassion for others which ultimately infiltrated her songwriting.
