Listen to Secret Admirer now

About Barbudo

Barbudo is a British ‘Nu-eyed funk’ group from the south coast town of Havant, Portsmouth. Fusing elements of old-school funk, psych rock and smooth R&B, brothers Ben and Harry Stanworth, along with Elliot Salter have established an intoxicating sound which oozes charm and flamboyancy. Taking inspiration from the pioneers of 70’s funk, soul and disco, as well as acts such as Steely Dan, Shuggie Otis and The Isley Brothers, Barbudo have concocted a sound equal parts contemporary with yesteryear’s glow. This blend has given the band a distinct sound that has won over audiences across the nation.

“We were going go for latin-infused funk vibe, like a blend of Michael Jackson and Santana” explains Ben. Thematically ‘Secret Admirer’ is a tongue in cheek interpretation of having guilty pleasures.

“It’s a playful confession of secretly liking something that is deemed ‘uncool’ by most people. You might not publicly admit to liking it, but beyond judging eyes you see it for what it is. Like listening to Coldplay when you are sad…”, reveals Harry.

DIY Magazine editor and record label executives recently chose Barbudo as the winner of ‘Record Store Day Unsigned’ competition for their video ’SXC’, resulting in an EP being pressed to vinyl and sold in stores nationwide.

Modern-day music marketing for the emerging artist

Photography by Matthew Kane of woman guitarist

Did you know there are now more than 30 million musicians in the USA competing for the attention and loyalty of a nation of discerning music lovers? The music industry is often labeled as relentless and even more so for female artists with the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative reporting that 2017 marked a six-year low for female artists as they accounted for a mere 16.8% of chart-topping artists. While raw talent and tenacity play a big part in overall success, something as seemingly insignificant as effectively marketing your own music often has the ability to make or break even the most talented of emerging female artists.

You play state-of-art instruments like a pro, have killer songs and have thought about going on tour with your band. You are ready to take your music to the next level, empower other up-and-coming artists and become famous, but you have no idea how to reach your fans. If you want to become a successful musician and sell your music to countless people, it is imperative that you create a significant amount of heat on the street. While word-of-mouth marketing is still seen as one of the most powerful means of promoting your music, the internet, and social media

While word-of-mouth marketing is still seen as one of the most powerful means of promoting your music, the internet, and social media, in particular, has opened up endless doors in terms of effective music marketing. Creating an emotional reaction over the internet that can see you gain life-long, money-spending fans and be relatively easy if you follow a few basic guidelines.

Don’t ditch social media

Just when we thought social media couldn’t get any bigger, it did.  Despite some recent negative hype surrounding Facebook and its ever-changing algorithms, it remains the fastest-growing social media platform, with the average Facebook user accessing the platform as many as 8 times a day.  As powerful as social-media marketing may be, it isn’t a straight-forward marketing tool and often acts as more of a catalyst for conversation and improved word-of-mouth marketing. Fan engagements are of vital importance, regardless of platform.

Artists and bands should aim to post fresh, interesting content on a regular basis, taking the time to ‘like, comment and reply’ on fan posts. There are a few brilliant social media marketing strategies that can be employed and that work particularly well if all your accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.) are linked. Posting short teasers to your new tracks is a great way to create hype around your music.

Going live on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram during a live gig is great, although hosting a Q&A session is even better in terms of engagement. There are many artists who put a significant amount of effort into their social media presence. Selena Gomez, for instance, has perfected fan-interaction on social media and has even linked her accounts to her website, maximizing her exposure across all platforms.

Get in on the blogs

Promoting your music entails reaching out to new audiences and interacting with your current fans.  Music-related blogs carry huge potential in terms of music marketing as bloggers are constantly on the look-out for new content.  Even emerging artists are able to approach blogs with a cleverly worded, personal pitch that will sell their appeal to the blog’s followers.

Blogs generally have an established audience that could turn into fans for the artist or band if the blogger is sufficiently impressed. Generic album reviews may not cut it where some of the more hip blogs are concerned so aim to give interesting content of new songs, tours and charity initiatives. Podcast blogs, social media blogs and, website blogs should all be considered – your chances of being featured are greater if you approach as many reputable blogs as possible instead of only a select few.

The time and effort invested into the effectual marketing of your music will never go unrewarded. It is important to remember that even though internet marketing may form the basis of your campaign, traditional promotional methods such as print media and live music should never be discarded. The most successful marketing strategy will be one that embraces age-old proven methods as well as more modern-day approaches, combining them into a seamless, striking effort that will see you not only win over the hearts of new fans but succeed in keeping your current ones well appeased, too.

Now playing: ‘The Yield’ by Kate Fenner

Kate Fenner, NYC folk/singer-songwriter, has a new music entitled ‘The Yield’ video as well as a new album, Middle Voice out.

Photos of Kate Fenner

About the album Middle Voice

“Middle Voice” is a vital snapshot for Kate Fenner; the title, aside from being a grammatical term to describe a subject that is both an actor andacted-upon, both agent and patient, conjures up a voice both in the middle of its life, and in-between feelings about many things: love, purpose, illness, death. A kind of sweet and earned ambivalence towards life and art, Fenner describes:

Kate_Fenner_black_and_white_photo“I recorded the bed tracks for this album after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer and slated for surgery to remove it. This diagnoses itself came after a fallow period of illness and getting sober. I had started to write again, and wanted to capture my voice on tape in the event that something went awry in the surgery. Tony Scherr, my old friend, stepped up immediately; we recorded all the beds in less than three weeks in short 3-hr sessions while my son was in school. We later added overdubs and a couple newer songs, once my voice had healed” – Kate Fenner

About Kate Fenner

Kate Fenner is a Canadian musician, currently based in New York City. The New York Times describes her vocal stylings as having a “lusty, alternative, Joni Mitchell-ish sound”. She was one of the primary singers and songwriters for the Canadian alternative rock band Bourbon Tabernacle Choir in the 1980s and 1990s. After its dissolution, Fenner continued performing as a duo with her former Bourbon bandmate Chris Brown. In 2000, she toured and sang with Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip on the “Music @ Work” tour. Fenner released a solo album, Horses and Burning Cars, in 2003, followed by her second solo album, Magnet, produced by Chris Brown.

Fenner’s music was also featured on the soundtrack for the “Mystery On Fifth Avenue” Apartment project by the New York architecture firm 212box. “Salamandre”, co-written by her and Brown, was built around four melodies of inspiration through four centuries of music, including Renaissance, classical, Victorian, a Venetian waltz, jazz, ragtime, blues, folk, and funk. “Salamandre” was commissioned and curated as part of the “Mystery On Fifth Avenue” by architectural designer Eric Clough.

In December 2004, through January 2005, Fenner was invited to be the opening act for blues artist B.B. King on a tour through the American South, at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, and at BB King’s in New York City.

At this time, Fenner also began to sing in several performance pieces for the visual artist Joan Jonas, among them “The Shape, the Scent, the Feel of Things”, originally commissioned by the Dia Beacon and subsequently performed around the world, “Reading Dante”, and “They Come to Us Without a Word”, which premiered at the Venice Biennale in 2015.

In November 2017, she released a third solo album, “Middle Voice”, followed with some performances. Fenner recorded it with long-time musical collaborator Tony Scherr. Musical contributors to the recording include Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, Norah Jones, Chris Brown, and Tony Scherr.

Now playing: ‘Get 2 Kno Me’ by Yaysh | New music alert

Red Fashion statement from Yash
Music video Get 2 Kno Me Music video bath tub scene

Listening to new music,  Fromgirltogirl found a cool music video from the pop/hip hop artist and LGBTQ activist Yaysh entitled “Get 2 Kno Me”. We must warn you, the music video is all-nude.

Yaysh
Get 2 Kno Me (Music VIdeo)
Independent

About Get 2 Kno Me

“Get 2 Kno Me” is a romantic, reggae-pop song about falling in love. Freestyled out of both joy and sadness the song is a reflection of a culture increasingly afraid to fall in love. During the song, Yaysh explores the notions of vulnerability, self-esteem, lovemaking, and the overarching fearlessness of diving headfirst into a romantic relationship with her new single and accompanying music video. The sound is mellow, relaxing, and gives off positive vibes drawn from reggae pop influence.

“Nudity is being used as metaphor and message for baring it all because being naked is a form of completely showing yourself, at least on a physical level. It is a sign of inherent confidence in being human, that there is nothing wrong with who we are, nothing wrong with love, love-making, being completely naked and showing your entirety and letting people judge.  We deserve to feel comfortable in our own skin and to make love and enjoy ourselves and being human fully!” – Yaysh

Yaysh also emphasizes diversity, tying back to her idea that you have to bare it all to truly find love, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation.

“We deserve to celebrate our bodies and our beauty and sexuality and feel at home with who we are. We don’t need to be ashamed.” – Yaysh
