About the book Sewing the Rainbow

Sewing the Rainbow is about Gilbert Baker and the creation of the rainbow flag. The book takes readers on a journey from Baker’s childhood in a small town in Kansas to his historic artistic career in San Francisco. We now see that flag around the world. In short, the book shows that when you see a rainbow flag, you’ll know it’s okay to be your colorful self. We recommend Sewing the Rainbow for ages 4-8.

Pitman has also written the groundbreaking “This Day in June,” “Feminism from A to Z.” Watch a preview of “Feminism from A to Z” below:

In recent years, discussion of an inclusive curriculum in schools from K-12 through college has trended and shown a tremendous need for more materials related to LGBTQ+ communities for children, this book adds to that growing list of resources.
