Nearly 50% of Americans Do Not Use PTO (Personal Time Off)

Do you know nearly half of Americans do not use personal time off ( PTO)? Many Americans fear personal time off will be used as retaliation when working for a bad employer or when workers are enabled to not support each other in order to advance by poor leadership.

But summer is here and many Americans are in need of a vacation. How many days should the average american take off work?

A new study revealed 72% of Americans say they feel “burnt out,” yet 1 in 3 feel guilty about taking PTO.

  • 45% Do not use all their PTO 
  • 1 in 5 Americans say their boss has gotten upset by their use of PTO ( this is against your labor rights and had more than 100 people witness this at a hostile workplace)
  • More than 1 in 10 are leaving jobs because of bad PTO policy
  • 2 in 3 Americans would like unlimited PTO, yet 43% think they would underuse such a policy

Unfortunately, 51% of Americans said they have used their paid time off for non-vacation issues like care of a loved one or fighting an illness instead of taking a vacation. When employees do step away from the office, 57% of Americans say their managers have contacted them and 47% still send and check their work emails.

Methodology

In April 2022, 553 Americans and 557 Europeans with full-time jobs were surveyed. American respondents ranged in age from 18 to 75 with an average age of 37. 48% were women and 49% men.

European respondents were from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Respondents ranged in age from 18 to 66 with an average age of 33. 49% were women and 50% men.

81% of Americans get 4 weeks or less paid time off.
