Sleep Struggles: An America Bedtime Routine(s) Study

Many Americans have unhealthy bedtime habits.

It is no secret that sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but a new nationwide survey finds more than half of Americans are not getting enough shut-eye. Falling asleep is the hardest part and staying asleep is tricky.

37% of people wake up in the middle of the night every night. A recent viral TikTok suggests eating right before bed to prevent waking up overnight, however, but 1 in 10 Americans don’t brush their teeth before going to sleep.

The report found stress, insomnia, and work are the leading causes of sleep issues. Other highlights from the report include:

  • Average American spends 44 minutes in bed doing things besides sleeping
  • More than 1 in 3 get 6 hours of sleep or less per night
  • 33% think they’d sleep better if they didn’t have to share the bed with their partner, 37% said the same about their pet
  • 1 in 5 snooze their alarm every day
  • 27% nap every single day

There are several reasons why people have trouble sleeping, including their bedtime routine, stress, and uncomfortable beds.

42% of people wash their bed sheets once a month, 41% wash them once a week, and 15% wash them every 2+ months. When it comes to pillow cases, 40% wash them once a month and 44% wash them once a week.

Methodology

In July 2022, 1,104 participants were surveyed to learn more about bedtime routine and sleep habits. 49% were male, 49% female, and 2% were non-binary. Respondents ranged in ages between 18 and 80. The average age was 39.
