How can local communities encourage and facilitate active lifestyles among residents?

“An intentionally built, clean, and safe environment that allows physical activity opportunities to be accessible by all, regardless of socioeconomic status and/or physical ability – sidewalks, public parks, playgrounds, walking paths, indoor recreation spaces, and sports fields. Then, ensure residents are aware of what is available to them to support an active lifestyle. Organizing community events throughout the year that get people moving together would not only encourage active lifestyles but also help build a strong community.” Connie Tompkins, Ph.D. – Associate Professor, University of Vermont

“Building sidewalks or bike lanes when feasible would be great. Also, posting signs to raise awareness of sharing the road is important for safety. In parks, having trails or equipment would provide an opportunity to engage.” Steven K. Malin, Ph.D., FACSM – Associate Professor, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

How can we increase access to and use of gyms and recreational facilities? Would incentives – such as tax deductions for gym memberships – or penalties – such as higher health care premiums – be more effective?

“Establishing shared use agreements, which allow for public access to existing recreation facilities or spaces when not being used, is one strategy. And positive motivation rather than punitive is typically more effective when it comes to encouraging healthy behaviors, so incentives rather than penalties would be the way to go. Ultimately, for someone to engage in and maintain a physically active lifestyle, it needs to be easily accessible and they need to enjoy it.” Connie Tompkins, Ph.D. – Associate Professor, University of Vermont

What tips do you have for someone looking to maintain an active lifestyle on a budget?

“Just move. Being active does not mean one has to have expensive gadgets or equipment. A decent pair of running/cross-trainers can go a long way to support building up steps throughout the day – a good target is 7500/day. A practical way to build up to these step goals would be taking light to brisk walks for just 10-15 min after each main meal (e.g., breakfast lunch or dinner). Another thought would be to make ‘exercise snacks’ a part of your day.

Many of us get older, we sit for most of the working day given our jobs. If people can get up and walk around for 1-5 min an hour, that would help too.

In line with low-budget activity would be to do bodyweight exercises, including body squats, jumping jacks, lunges, push-ups, or planks for 1 to 5 minutes an hour, this could go a long way in curbing blood glucose, blood pressure, and lipid levels to even improving cognition throughout the day not to mention mental well-being.

Another idea could be to purchase resistance bands that help mix up the type of weight lifting one does. These are portable and easy to take to work or hotels when traveling. A jump rope too in addition is a great buy for a low cost that provides tremendous cardiovascular workouts. If inclined, one can buy a stability ball and use this as a chair. It would help build strength in core muscles and support low back pain.”- Steven K. Malin, Ph.D., FACSM – Associate Professor, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

“I love to encourage people to look for opportunities where they can ‘sneak’ in physical activity throughout their typical day – park in a spot further away from a building, take the stairs, walk while on the phone – these may seem small and insignificant, but small changes add up. One often overlooked budget-friendly resource is the public library. Public libraries frequently host yoga or other fitness classes, offer free passes to state parks, and exercise videos that patrons can physically check out or download. Also, many fitness and recreational facilities offer discounts based on professions (teachers, healthcare workers, students). And finally, there are countless, free, activity-based online- or app-based resources.” – Connie Tompkins, Ph.D. – Associate Professor, University of Vermont

Guide to trading indices with CFDs

Europe stock exchange displays on mobile phone.

CFD stands for Contract for Difference. It is a type of financial derivative that allows traders to speculate on market movements and potentially profit from them without having to own the underlying asset. When it comes to CFD trading, we often hear about single Stock CFDs. A trader has an eye on the stock, and instead of buying shares, they buy a CFD and speculate on its price movement. We can do the same thing with indices. In fact, this is what people refer to when they talk about indices trading or index trading.

What are Indices?

To begin, we need to define indices. An index is a benchmark that covers and tracks the performance of a basket of stocks that share a characteristic. This can be market cap, geographic location, sector, industry, or even something extremely specific – like an overlap of all the above. Indices are helpful because they give traders a perspective on the overall health of the market they want to focus on.

Famous Indices around the world: North America

There are famous indices around the world, and they mostly revolve around tracking large cap stocks in each country or region. This gives traders the ability to track how the overall market is performing in each region. For example, we have all heard of the NASDAQ Composite Index. It is a stock market index that includes almost every single stock listed on the NASDAQ. It is a great indicator of how the entire stock market is performing, and many traders use it as a tool to predict how the US economy is doing.

Another famous index in the US is the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIJA). It is an index comprised of stocks from the 30 biggest companies listed on stock exchanges in the US, and it is one of the oldest and most-followed indices.

Europe and Asia

In Asia, we have the Nikkei 225 which tracks the 225 leading companies in the Japanese equity market. We also have the Hang Seng Index that tracks Hong Kong’s 50 largest companies in the city, and more.

In Europe, we have the EURO STOXX 50 that tracks 50 blue-chip stocks from 11 countries in the Eurozone. We also have the DAX tracking 40 major blue-chip companies in Germany, the FTSE 100 tracking the top 100 companies on the London Stock Exchange, and many more.

MENA

In the MENA region, we have the MSCI Arabian Markets Domestic Index, which tracks large and mid-cap companies across the 11 Arab Markets countries. These countries are Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates. We also have the Dow Jones MENA Index, which tracks the performance of companies in the same 11 countries. On top of that, we have more specific indices, such as the MSCI United Arab Emirates Index that tracks the performance of large and mid-cap companies in the UAE market.

How to Trade Indices with CFDs

When people speak of trading indices, people often mean trading indices with ETFs, CFDs, or other derivatives. In this article, we will focus on trading Index CFDs.

To trade an Index CFD, you need to buy a contract from a CFD provider. It will allow you to speculate on an index and potentially make a profit when the market goes your way. As a trader, you will need to pay a commission (depending on the broker you trade with). The bulk of the contract is dependent on the spread. This is the difference between the bid price and the offer price at the time of buying the contract.

To open and close a CFD trade, a trader will need to purchase a contract first. They then have an open position. This type of contract does not have an expiration date, which means that it is up to the trader to decide when to close their position. This can be within a day, a couple of days, a few weeks, or even months. However, most traders tend to close out their positions within a reasonable timeframe, because some brokers may incur overnight charges for every night the position is left open.

When the trader sees that there has been significant market movement in their favour, they can close their position with a second trade where they take the opposite position. For example, if a trader’s first trade is a long position (buying), they will take a short position (selling) to close out their trade. Conversely, if their first position is a short position (selling), they will take a long position (buying) to close out their position.

Why do people trade Index CFDs?

There are a few reasons people trade Index CFDs.

Large exposure and decreased risk

Firstly, people trade Index CFDs for exposure. When you speculate on an index, you are speculating on the average performance of a basket of companies tracked. This means that individual company performance does not have that big of an impact on the performance of your investment overall. This not only means you can speculate on a bunch of stocks at the same time, but also decreases your investment risk.

Focused investment

Another advantage for traders is that they can focus on the development of a specific region, country, industry, or sector easily. The index automatically tracks the performance of all companies that share a characteristic. If a trader wants to focus particularly on companies in developing economies, they can do so. If another trader is a tech enthusiast and want to see how tech companies are doing in the US, they can do so as well.

Flexibility in taking positions

A third advantage is the flexibility people have in taking positions, which allows traders to benefit from both bullish and bearish markets. If a trader sees that the index has been rising in value, they can take a long position. If they see that an index is doing poorly, they can ride the wave and take a short position. Either way, they can potentially make a profit.

High leverage

Finally, one advantage for the (more adventurous) trader is the use of high leverage. When one trades Index CFDs, they can trade with leverage as high as 50:1. This allows them to trade position sizes with very low margins – in other words, they only need to put down a low amount at the outset. High leverage can also translate to higher profits when the trader’s speculation is correct, which is a huge advantage. However, a higher leverage can also lead to higher losses if the trader’s speculation turns out to be incorrect. Therefore, it is best to use leverage cautiously.

Get started trading Index CFDs

If speculating on the performance of indices instead of owning individual stocks sounds appealing to you, you may want to give Index CFDs a try. You can do this with a local broker or an international broker that operates in the UAE, such as Saxo. Look up the available indices you can trade and set up a trading plan that can help you make the most of your trades. If you are on the fence about trading Index CFDs, you can also read up on the topic before committing.

How can Tech Leaders repair the public disconnect?

Five tech giants alone are projected to account for a fifth of all earnings accrued by the S&P 500 by 2023 .
It is no secret that big tech companies have massive amounts of digital power. Five tech giants alone are projected to account for a fifth of all earnings accrued by the S&P 500 by 2023 .

Tech companies having this amount of influence and power can make it easy for the public to be or feel isolated and uninformed about various developments. A recent Zelros study also found that 96% of people value ethical, responsible, and secure technology use from companies.

How can tech experts and executives reach out to the public and resolve the disconnect people are feeling towards tech companies?

Jonathan Shroyer, Chief CX Innovation Officer at Arise Virtual Solutions, offers a few ways tech companies can bridge the gap between them and the general public.

Be transparent. There is a lack of complete trust that the public has towards tech companies. One way to address public concerns is to be as transparent as possible regarding technological developments. Be as transparent as possible.

Hold your company and brand accountable. Maintaining and following a business code of ethics can be a great way to hold your company accountable. Publicizing that code and making it clear and accessible to the public is a great way to improve relations with the general public.

Don’t be afraid to admit mistakes. Mistakes are a part of life. Being able to admit your mistakes will gain you and the company great respect from people by showing you are actively working to improve.

Accept and listen to public feedback. There will always be ways to improve professionally and personally. Tech companies and tech company leaders need to do a better job of listening to what the public has to say and take their feedback into consideration when it comes to improving certain aspects of products and services. When people feel heard, they feel like their voice matters. This should not be underestimated by tech companies.

Jonathan Shroyer worked to develop Officium Labs back in 2019, which was acquired by Arise Virtual Solutions in 2021. Jonathan Shroyer is now the Chief CX Innovation Officer at Arise Virtual Solutions. He leads the gaming and consulting verticals and runs the CX Lab in San Francisco. Shroyer has two decades of experience building companies and leaders up. CIO Journal, a publication of The Wall Street Journal, named Shroyer among its “Top CX Professionals of 2022.”

STUDY: The states most ‘obsessed’ with Fast Food

Nebraska is the state most obsessed with fast food, new study reveals. Indiana ranks as the second most fast food-obsessed state, followed by Tennessee and Ohio.

New data reveals the states most obsessed with fast food, with Nebraska taking the top spot.  The research, carried out by PriceListo examined Google Trends data to analyze the past 12 months of Google searches across America for search terms frequently associated with fast food. These terms were then combined to give each state a total score to discover the states with the most fast food-obsessed residents.

The study revealed that Nebraska ranks as the most fast food-obsessed state in America. With a total score of 507 out of a possible 600, Nebraska topped the list due to its population having the highest search levels for two of the six keywords used in the study. For example, the keywords ‘fast food’ and ‘fast food restaurant’ are searched the most in Nebraska. Indiana ranks as the second most fast food-obsessed state in the country. Indiana has the highest proportion of its population searching for the term ‘Burger King’ and the third-highest searches for ‘McDonalds’, contributing to the state’s total score of 499 out of 600. Tennessee ranks as the third most fast food-obsessed state in the country, with a total score of 483.

The study revealed that Tennessee has the fifth-highest level of searches for ‘KFC ( Kentucky Fried Chicken)’ and the seventh-highest level for the term ‘fast food’ in the country. The study found that Ohio ranks as the fourth most fast food-obsessed state.

Ohio has the highest level of searches for the company ‘McDonalds’ and the eighth-highest level of searches for the company ‘Burger King’, giving the state a total score of 481 out of a possible 600. The study placed Alabama next in the ranking, as the fifth most fast food-obsessed state, with a total score of 478. Alabama had the seventh-highest search levels for ‘Burger King’ as well as ranked fifth-highest for searches for the term ‘fast food near me.’

Kentucky, the home of KFC, ranked sixth overall with a score of 477 out of 600 – just slightly lower than Alabama. Unsurprisingly, Kentucky searched for ‘KFC’ more than any other state, but also searched for ‘McDonalds’ at the second-highest rate of any state. The top ten is rounded out by Missouri ranking in seventh place, South Dakota in eighth, followed by Arkansas and Oklahoma in ninth and tenth place, respectively.

A spokesperson for PriceListo commented on the study:

“Not only does fast food taste great, it is also massively convenient and affordable, making it the go-to option for many when they’re stuck for what to eat. This study provides a fascinating insight into which states tend to opt for a fast food treat the most and which chains are the most preferable.”

This research was conducted by PriceListo, which is a fast, free, and transparent consumer pricing platform. Founded by a veteran team of pricing web experts, PriceListo has accurate pricing information for hundreds of thousands of businesses.

Study reveals the most ‘Travel-Obsessed’ states in the USA

Family beach vacation. Picture by the water.

New research reveals the most and least ‘travel-obsessed’ states in the countrySouth Carolina is officially the most travel-obsessed state in America, followed by Florida and Delaware.

New research reveals that South Carolina is the most travel-obsessed state.   The research, conducted by vacation experts Family Destinations Guide, analyzed Google Trends data of the last 12 months for search terms frequently used by travel enthusiasts and often associated with traveling. These search terms were then combined to give each state a total travel score to discover America’s most and least travel-obsessed states.

The study revealed that South Carolina ranks as the most travel-obsessed state in America. With a total travel score of 582 out of a possible 800, South Carolina ranks highly across every keyword analyzed in the study. For instance, South Carolina is the state most interested in travel agencies, having the highest number of searches for the term ‘travel agent’ in the country, and is the state searching for the phrase ‘beach vacation’ the second-most in the country.

Florida ranks as the second most travel-obsessed state in the country. With a total travel score of 561, Florida is mainly interested in budget-friendly holidays. The Sunshine State has the second-highest level of searches for the term ‘cheap flights’ and the third-highest level of searches for ‘cheap hotels’ in the country.

Delaware ranks as the third most travel-obsessed state in the country and Delaware has the highest level of searches for both the key terms ‘cheap hotels’ and ‘travel insurance’ in the country, giving Delaware a total travel score of 557.

The study placed Mississippi next in the ranking, placing fourth overall with a total travel score of 554, followed by Nevada, which ranked fifth with a score of 538. The top 10 most travel-obsessed states are rounded out by Georgia ranking in sixth place, Wyoming in seventh, followed by Louisiana, New York, and Hawaii in eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively.

Washington ranks as the least travel-obsessed state in the country, with the lowest total travel score of 392. The state has the lowest search levels for the phrase ‘cheap hotels’ in the country and the fourth-lowest number of searches for both the key terms ‘vacation packages’ and ‘family vacation.’

Utah features next in the ranking as the second least travel-obsessed state in the country. Utah has low search volumes for travel-related search terms across the board and has the second-lowest number of searches for ‘vacation packages’ in the country, with a total score of 416.  The study found that California is the third least travel-obsessed state in the country.

The Golden State has the fourth-lowest search levels for both the search terms ‘beach vacation’ and ‘travel agent,’giving a California total travel score of 418 out of a possible 800.  The study placed New Mexico next in the ranking, placing fourth overall with a total travel score of 418, followed by Oregon, which ranked fifth with a score of 423.  The top 10 least travel-obsessed states are rounded out by Michigan ranking in sixth place, Minnesota in seventh, followed by Wisconsin, Illinois, and Massachusetts in eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively.  A spokesperson for Family Destinations Guide commented on the study:

“According to data from the Vacationer, 81% of Americans traveled in summer 2022, either internationally or domestically. This equates to approximately 35 million more American travelers than in 2021, likely due to the easing of Covid-19 travel restrictions worldwide. This study can provide a useful indication into which areas of the country are home to the biggest travel enthusiasts, with South Carolina residents taking the crown and jet-setting away to new places and Washington residents perfectly happy sticking closer to home.”

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Tips from Assil Dayri

Marketing specialist Assil Dayri shares Black Friday and Cyber Monday tips as the advertising industry prepares for the Bargain season, with advertisers cutting investments by up to 25%.

Happy Thanksgiving! Now the the biggest shopping days of the year are here – Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The holiday season attracts millions of shoppers each year looking to close deals, compete for hot products and cross names off their shopping lists. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are great opportunities for people who have been waiting for months for a good discount on a specific product. It is also a chance for advertisers to start working on great marketing strategies in search of excellent results for merchants.

Brands and marketers will have to not only compete on price but also on how to present their products and offers. Creativity in terms of the ads themselves will be a way to stand out and catch the attention of customers. We know that people attention span is getting shorter and shorter which means that the ads will need to be ‘punchy’ and engaging says the CEO of A.M.D Consulting Group , an agency specialized in customer acquisition.

Black Friday is the time for brands to showcase social media skills and create attractive content that keeps audiences engaged while ensuring brand success positioning as the last quarter of the year is a critical time for businesses.

Consumer shopping behaviors have changed, and Black Friday deals are sometimes exclusively online — essentially turning Cyber Monday into Cyber weekend.

This led to the creation of Cyber Monday. Originally a retail holiday that concludes the Thanksgiving to Black Friday shopping weekend, Cyber Monday is now a global event for businesses big and small. In 2021, there were 7 million global Tweets about Black Friday and over 900K Tweets about Cyber Monday. Assil Dayri | Courtesy Kiko Gaspar Communications .

However, there is a differentiated preparation of the advertising industry for this year. Advertisers are making cuts up to 25%, even before the arrival of Black Friday.

Marketers and advertisers took note that the US job market remains strong, consumer spending is resilient, and inflation is slowing. High prices for food, rent, gasoline and other household costs took a toll on shoppers. As a result, many are reluctant to spend unless there is a big sale. Most consumers are being more selective with what they buy – in many cases, buying things cheaper and from less expensive stores because inflation is at its highest in 30 years.

Good news: retail-related figures show that consumers are buying more than ever before. So, this factor does not change expectations for 2022.

The categories where consumers will see significant discounts are:
1. Electronics, television, home appliances, fashion, beauty, and groceries on these two days.
2. Often it’s best to wait until Cyber Monday for ‘safer’ products like sneakers, fashion, and beauty, but we recommend taking advantage of Black Friday’s own deals as most retailers do great deals around this time.
3. With all these deals, unfortunately, fraudsters are also trying to cash in. To avoid falling victim to one or more of these Black Friday and Cyber Monday scams, take a hard look at scam practices to help you watch your wallet, shop wisely, and protect your personal information online.
