Now Playing: ‘Greater Than’ by Zach Churchill

Los Angeles-based Singer Songwriter Zach Churchill bares his soul without reservation on his confessional, potent new album “Greater Than.” It includes the lead single “Surrender.”

It’s an appropriate precursor to this bold album, exploring difficult feelings and painful trauma with a brave curious spirit. The single deals with addiction and hopelessness, yet there is healing and hope in its underlying music and message. Whether welcoming or foreboding, truth is Zach’s artistic and life mantra.

Zach Churchill’s Greater Than album makes for genuine storytelling.

Churchill elaborates on the album-writing process, explaining how it was therapeutic and encouraged him to trust his inner compass:

“Greater Than,” was written and recorded in Sherman Oaks, CA with my producer and friend, Tom Rasulo. Amidst a bunch of changes and trials in my personal life, the studio was a refuge and safe place for me to process all that was happening. I was able to explore difficult feelings, reflect on my current circumstances, and digest painful experiences. Basically, this album was incredibly therapeutic. It represents an incredibly important period in my life when I finally began to trust myself.

The title track, “Greater Than”, is about making other people your Higher Power and then being disappointed when they let you down, and finally coming to terms with the painful truth that no human being will ever be able to save or fix you.

“Surrender” is about addiction being the result of untreated trauma. “Each day is the same, I wake up in pain, and repeat what I fear with no resolution.”

“The past, it is real, and it’s living inside you. This pain, it can heal, you can change if you want to…”

Fromgirltogirl.com review of ‘Greater Than’ Album

The ‘Greater Than’ album is a splendor of emotions from track to track. We enjoy the story of overcoming struggle. Even if some of the lyrics can have us in our feelings, Zach Churchill keeps the instrumentals on the album upbeat or at a tempo that can be heard when you are having a good or bad day. It’s an easy 50 minute listen.

He pulls no punches: His lead single “Bartender” chronicles a harrowing heroin overdose. “The person I’m singing to saved my life,” Zach explains. “He was closing up at 2:00 a.m. at the venue when I overdosed. Everyone was gone, but he checked the bathroom because the light was on. The door was locked, so he got the key and found me. If he had just gone home I’d be dead.”

In the hospital, after a medically induced coma, Zach was forced to face his family and himself.

“You hit your bottom when you stop digging,” Churchill says.

The song is all about him saying ‘I’m done.’

Heartbreak and Hope was recorded with noted producer, artist, and multi-instrumentalist Julian Coryell who invited key musicians to power the tracks.

About Zach Churchill

On a recent journey Zach traveled The Camino de Santiago, an ancient European pilgrim route leading to the tomb of St. James in northwest Spain, a sacred path with a profound history. “I was surrounded by people who were on the pilgrimage for spiritual reasons, this great family,” he recalls. “With the right attitude, every day of my life can be an adventure like The Camino.”

Stream lead single “Surrender” on Spotify.

‘Greater Than’ Album Tracklist

11 songs serve as musical mile markers commemorating a 10 year journey through Zach Churchill twenties — a decade that he barely survived.

1. Surrender, 2. Greater Than, 3. Living in L.A., 4. Reach You, 5. Love & Terror, 6. I Can’t Stand Myself, 7. Hover, 8. Sonoyta, 9. How To Live, 10. Then We Can Think About Dying

With an expressively vulnerable voice, singer-songwriter Zach Churchill breathes life, love, and gratitude into absorbing narratives. Fromgirltogirl.com Music Review

We love Andrea Ward’s new single ‘Awake at Night,’ because it is perfectly mellow for a rainy day inside or book read. It could even be an intro or outro of a movie or Television show. The song is a good balance of relaxation and emotional energy. Listen while you take a shower or bath, we promise you won’t regret it. It’s also perfect for a dinner date night listen for singles and couples.

Now playing: Situationship by Kaleigh

Kaleigh, a multi-talented musician, actress, and model returns with hard rocking new single and music video “Situationship,” out November 4th on streaming platforms. As Kaleigh‘s music has evolved over the years, she has embraced a heavy alternative, punk-infused sound while simultaneously opening up with raw, emotionally charged lyricism.

Kaleigh opens up on the themes of her new single.

“Have you ever been in less than a relationship, but more than a friendship with someone? Well, me too. Situationship is about being frustrated as you are stuck in the in-between with someone you’ve come to care about.

Kaleigh explains, too often people are quick to trade a good thing for a good time. While others are damaged by traumatic experiences that keep them from moving forward and falling in love.

The song Situationship is a therapeutic, anger-release to help listeners let go of pent up emotion that otherwise would scare off love.

LISTEN TO SITUATIONSHIP BY KALEIGH

The negative effects of casual dating and the widely accepted ‘situationship’ are felt equally by the Millennial, Zillennial, and Gen Z populations.

The song Situationship highlights one’s ability to reclaim power and decide if a lifestyle type is the right fit.

The rock genre has always been about stepping outside of societal expectations and generational norms. Situationship is about doing the unexpected in an era of instant gratification and emotional unavailability — reverting to the old-fashioned, slow-burn kind of love.

Fromgirltogirl.com Music Review

We love Kaleigh’s youthful vocals and the heavy metal opening works great for Situationship. The song is relatable and the music video is a must watch because it demonstrates the missing in-action partner that is the default of situationship(s). We also like Kaleigh’s fashion.

Her most recent release “Situationship” is a deep dive into the rock sound she has always been meant to play.

In addition to her work as a musical artist, she is an actress. Whether paywalled or published for free, you can grow your substack audience by participating in discussion threads to have conversations with subscribers.

Some great features Substack creators should consider are:

Substack for Podcasts, which allows audio creators to publish and grow their podcasts.

Substack is now beta testing a video player to help creators grow their audience.

Who are Substack Creators?

  • Traditional writers ( Primary Creators)
  • Media figures

  • Musical Artists

How to start a Substack and be successful

It’s incredibly easy to sign up and start posting on Substack. Follow these steps, and you’ll be publishing in minutes.

Define your niche

Decide who is your audience and know their desires, concerns, viewing habits, and what they are willing to buy.

Sign up for a Substack account

You can use an email or sign up with your Twitter account. Substack’s Twitter integration makes it easy to link your contacts and feature your newsletter and bio. This works well for Substack creators who have a large Twitter following.

Create your publication on Substack

  1. Name your publication
  2. Write a summary and be sure to include what it is about and confirm your URL. The more creative and short the summary, the easier it will be to draw in subscribers. Get viewers excited about reading your content.

Import your mailing list

I decided to import some of Fromgirltogirl.com’s subscribers. I did it by uploading a CSV file to import contacts but Mailchimp, TinyLetter, or Patreon can make importing your mailing list easier. Just make sure your subscribers consent.

How to add subscribers to Substack

You manually add family, friends, and business associates to your subscriber list as a way to build a subscriber base. Don’t worry about the long haul way you will continue to grow subscribers, just get started.

I recommend signing up with a second personal email address to see your newsletter exactly as it looks to your substack subscribers.

Here is how Fromgirltogirl.com can help you grow your substack subscribers and monetize.

Call to action

With 14+ years in drafting call-to-action copywriting , Briana Booker, Chief Editor of Fromgirltogirl.com, can help you fill in your posts with headers, footers, and buttons to make it easy for readers and viewers to subscribe to your newsletter, share your content, and comment on your posts.

Use social media

Always post your newsletters on social media. Break down your content via Twitter threads and screen shot key takeaways for Instagram or set up direct integration with Facebook.

Add Comments

Substack thrives on discussion. So make comments on related posts link back to your own Substack.

Build partnerships

Guest post on other people’s Substacks, interview other creators on your own, ask relevant accounts on social media to share your publication and make people pay for a sponsorship.

Substack did their own case study, following Ali Abouelatta and his blog First 1000 , where he describes how he gained over 20,000 subscribers within three years. Ali Abouelatta achieved this growth by engaging with his niche outside of the platform and marketing through Quora, Discord, WhatsApp and Slack.

Is Substack free?

As a publisher, Substack is free to create an account, and publish text or audio without paying for storage. Moreover, the majority of Substack posts are free to read.

It’s up to content creators whether or not to place their work behind a paywall. We recommend Substack creators offer a mixture of free and premium paid content to subscribers.

A subscription to a paid Substack averages around $5 a month but really popular substack pages have seen subscribers willing to pay up to $50.

Washington D.C. is the No. 1 Most In-Shape State

new study shows the District of Columbia is in the number one best shape in the nation.

America has long been among the fattest countries, and it got worse with nearly 50% of Americans putting on weight since the pandemic. Does your bathing suit feel a little tight this summer? You are not alone.

Beach season serves as a motivating factor to get back in shape, but some states are closer to attaining that elusive six-pack of abs, and getting all the health benefits.

RunReviews.com today released a study on the States in the Best and Worst Shape using the most recent data from the CDC on obesity, diabetes, heart disease, medical checkups, and number of gyms in all 50 states and Washington D.C.

D.C.’s ranking is due to having the Number two lowest obesity rate in the nation at 24.3%, the Number 1 lowest diabetes rate at 7.5%, and the Number 1 most gyms with 20.1 per 100,000 residents.

The nation’s capital scored above the national average in every category except one — only 71.8% of residents got annual wellness checkups compared to the national average of 74.9%.

The five places in the best shape are D.C., Massachusetts, Colorado, Connecticut, and New Hampshire.  The five states in the worst shape are West Virginia, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Alabama.

Now playing: Daisies | Raye Robinson

Raye Robinson pictured with a Daisy in her mouth.

We are officially titling summer 2021 “we’re outside,” as we start to see the light at the end of tunnel, regarding the Coronavirus Pandemic. To get you ready for a great summer, here is Daisies by Raye Robinson who is a Los Angeles alternative pop artist. Raye Robinson is a bowl of sunshine and femininity with her new track. The song is also a reminiscent of Lily Allen meets Billie Eilish.

If you haven’t heard of Raye Robinson, she has garnered acclaim from the likes of Live Nation’s Ones to Watch and Earmilk.

Through honest songwriting and relatable themes, Raye Robinson creates a fresh and intoxicating sound, emitting an innocence and dreaminess that continues to whisk music lovers away to their own delight.

Having previously performed in bands, her time alone during the pandemic has allowed Robinson to dive into her music and self while discovering her love for taking creative control over her sound.

Produced by Rob Auerbach, out of his do-it-yourself (DIY) garage studio, Robinson’s upcoming music emits a spunky, fun, laidback and feel good vibe that is sure to become a summer favorite.

The debut single “Daisies” is the first track off of her upcoming EP entitled Crushes & Love Songs. Unsurprisingly the song is a matter of the heart, narrating her unfortunate and confusing love situation.

The songwriter confides, “I ended things with a guy that I was seeing because I was afraid to get into something serious. After we stopped seeing each other, though, I really missed the connection we had, and I couldn’t stop wondering ‘Does he miss me too? Does he hate me now? Did I make the right decision?’”

Robinson explains this sparked her thinking about the “he loves me, he loves me not,” picking petals from flowers trope. She shares “I immediately loved using the word ‘daisies’ in the hook, and from there the rest of the song came together pretty quickly!”

“Daisies” starts off with an intimate, minimalistic feel laced in tender piano hits, the track bursts to life with a bass-infused piano, soft vocals and glassy, light production. The song carries a diverse use of keys creating a soundscape of heavy and light with an almost old-school Lily Allen-esque bounce to the rhythm. The track is beaming in sunshine and femininity creating warmth to the track which radiates through its simplicity.

Listen to “Daisies” by Raye Robinson now on Spotify.
