Relationships can also be affected by the current cost-of-living crisis. Find an activity to do with your special someone on a budget can be difficult. It can also be a struggle to think outside of the box for fun activities to do together, especially after having to maintain relationships in recent unprecedented times, where we feel we are lacking creativity.   

Valon Asani from relationship app Dua.com has shared some fun and quirky date ideas that you most likely have not done before and are easy on your wallet.    

1. At home Paint and Sip. ‘Paint and Sips’ are a way to see how your partner can get creative, however, they can be pricey. Paint and Sips are in-formal art classes where you paint the same image and drink cocktails, mocktails, or wine.   You can recreate a similar experience at home that is not limited to painting and can include fancy homemade cocktails/mocktails. You can purchase affordable arts and crafts sets from your local craft store or air-drying clay.  

 2. Game Night. Game nights are a fun and competitive way to put your partner’s skills to the test. Most video games do have a co-op mode where you can team up together. Story-based games are great as you go through challenges together. Board games can also provide hours of entertainment on a low budget. You can find rare board games at charity shops. Most new board games are fairly inexpensive and can be a great option for date night.   

3. Visit an Art Gallery or Museum. Most museums and galleries have free entry or discounted tickets available, which means you can get cultured on a low budget. This is a great way to see what art styles your partner likes and can even help you decide what to create for your ‘At home Paint and Sip.’  

4. The Viral £5/$5 Meal Challenge.  This challenge has taken over social media and is a fun way to put your cooking, budgeting and creative abilities to the test. Taking turns, you and your partner must come up with a three-course meal that stays within a set budget – typically the budget is set low to make this more challenging – the lower it is, the more difficult. The challenge is in the budget, and the lower it is, the more challenging it can be.  

5. Book Club.  If your partner is a book lover, let your partner join an ‘at home book club’ where you and your partner can read the same book, with a cozy drink and candles. Not only can this improve your communication skills with your partner as you discuss your thoughts on the book, but this can also provoke interesting and thoughtful conversations. This can be a great and intimate way to reignite the spark in your relationship.  

6. Gardening.   Some garden centres offer free volunteer gardening days, especially in the Spring. This can be a fun activity with your partner, and you can give back to your community at the same time! You can also garden at home, growing seasonal fruits or vegetables that you can harvest and cook with.  Over time this can be very cost-effective, as you can re-grow your own produce.   

7. Come Dine with Me.  Cooking and baking is a fun activity to do with your partner. You can try recipes from various parts of the world and learn about different cultures. To make this more fun and competitive, you can host a couples Come Dine With Me and judge your partner’s dishes!  

8. Hobby Swap. This is for the partner that find themselves doing what their partner likes most of the time. Take turns explaining and participating in your partner’s hobbies. This can also help you get to know your partner even more. You can teach your partner a skill that you have, such as playing the piano.   

9. Play Tourist. You can become a tourist in your own city with your partner because the chances are you’ve not been to any historical places that are on your doorstep. A spokesperson from Dua.com says that “exploring your city can be refreshing and give you a new perspective on where you live.”

Research conducted by online fitness resource Total Shape found the best ways to keep active while working from home.  Since Covid-19 swept across the globe, many industries have shifted to fully remote or hybrid working. During COVID, 70% of the workforce was working from home (WFH) and since then, 61.9% of companies have planned to incorporate remote work, be it fully remote or hybrid.  
With more people working from the comfort of their home, a Health Impact Assessment found that working from home may be associated with more sedentary lifestyles and in turn increased risk of obesity. Most of our calories throughout the day are burned through non-exercise activity thermogenesis such as walking.

This guide from Total Shape includes some great ways to stay fit even when you are working from home.   

Standing Desk. Cost: $150 – $600Calories per hour: 60 – 90.
The standing desk has gained popularity over the last few years and have been proven to provide many positive health benefits. Standing burns more calories than sitting. Research has also shown that 66% of workers felt more productive and 87% felt more energized. Standing activates the muscles in your legs and core while stimulating circulation, which can help you to burn extra calories and build your strength. Standing desks come in a range of styles.

Desk TreadmillCost: $200 – $800Calories per hour: 170 – 240.  
Although it is a more expensive option, this is one of the most effective ways to stay fit while working at home. It essentially takes the standing desk a step further by adding the walking element. Studies have shown that walking between 1 and 2.5 mph can lead to an extra 170 – 240 calories burned per hour. Not only have people encountered the physical benefits of getting more exercise, but walking helps to oxygenate the brain by stimulating blood circulation. So, we think better and more efficiently when we walk. With most people having busy schedules outside of work, it can make getting the recommended amount of physical exercise difficult, which makes this a great way to stay fit while working from home.

Under Desk BikesCost: $50 – $200Calories per hour: 100 – 600.
A very similar concept to the desk treadmill, an under the desk bike features a small set of pedals that can slide under your desk so that you can pedal while sitting. The small machines can be altered to have more resistance which makes it harder or easier to pedal. This type of aerobic exercise is good for staying fit and can help strengthen your legs and joints. Studies estimated that peddling while seated can burn up to 10 calories per minute depending on the intensity, which means you could burn up to 600 calories an hour. However, the average gentle peddling will most likely burn 100-300 an hour. 
  
Resistance Bands. Calories per hour: 180 – 252. Cost: $15 – $40.
Resistance Bands are an affordable option to help train your body and get fitter. You can perform plenty of more passive resistance band workouts even when you are doing something at your desk. This means that in between typing and during brainstorming sessions, your body can keep active alongside your mind. Exercises could include bicep curls, overhead tricep extensions and shoulder raises. However, there are many variations and other exercises that can be done with resistance bands. Resistance bands can help you build muscle and burn calories while seated at your desk.

A study published in 2022 showed that resistance band training lowers body fat in people who are overweight better than other forms of training, including free weights and bodyweight exercises.  

7 Minute workout. Calories per 7 mins: 20 – 50. Cost: Free.  
Searching “seven-minute workout,” on the app store will reveal a fantastic app that will guide you through various workouts that you can do in your own home, which take just seven minutes at a time. The best thing about the seven-minute workout app is that its programs are designed especially for people who are doing the workouts at home, and who have no special equipment. The 7-minute nature of these workouts allows people with busy schedules to fit in exercise and can help break up your working day which can increase productivity. Building muscle will also help you to burn more NEAT calories as well which in the long term will help you stay fit and healthy. 

Diet. Exercise and living an active lifestyle are obviously important in staying fit and healthy; however, diet is a key contributor to overall health and fitness. People with few distractions at home may find that they are more aware of hunger than they would be at the workplace which can lead to more snacking and possibly an unhealthier diet. By focusing on eating healthy foods and healthy snacks, people who work from home can ensure that they are staying fit and keeping their bodies healthy. Studies show that both the overall composition of the human diet and specific dietary components have been shown to have an impact on brain function, this means that diet isn’t only going to keep you fit, but it’s going to improve cognitive function, and thus the quality of work produced.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s recently finalized divorce and it is the most searched divorce in America, a new study reveals.

The study, conducted by experts Learn Divorce Law, analyzed a comprehensive list of celebrity divorces of the last 20 years to reveal the most searched one in America and around the globe.

  • Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s divorce is first, with 17,650 average monthly searches
  • Adele’s divorce from Simon Konecki comes in second with 16,000 searches
  • Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet’s divorce is third

The long and tedious split between Kim Kardashian and Kanye West takes first place with 17,650 average monthly searches in the United States ( U.S.) alone, and a whopping 45,000 average monthly searches worldwide. The divorce was filed in February 2021 by Kim Kardashian and finalized after almost two years. This, together with Kanye West’s behavior on social media has widely attracted the attention of fans and overlookers to their divorce.

Second is the divorce between Adele and Simon Konecki with 16,000 average monthly searches in the U.S. and 21,000 average searches worldwide. The couple split after only two years, as the British singer filed for divorce in 2019, which was then finalized in 2021. The separation got plenty of attention thanks to Adele’s latest album “30” which came out in late 2021 and was confirmed to be inspired by the breakup and heartache that came with it, as well as motherhood and other aspects of the singer’s life. 

Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet’s divorce comes in third with 7,000 average searches in the U.S. and 13,000 average monthly searches worldwide. The couple had been together since 2005 but did not get married until 2017. The split happened after 17 years together, with five as husband and wife. 

Further down on the list, the “recent” split between Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus is fourth with 4,730 average monthly searches in the US and 6,170 searches worldwide. The couple had married in 1993 and filed for divorce in 2010 for the first time, dropping the proceedings after a few months. However, in April 2022 Tish Cyrus filed for divorce a second time, revealing that they had been separated for more than two years, since 2020.

The top five closes with Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott, whose divorce got 3,100 average monthly searches in the US and 8,300 average searches worldwide. The split is famous mostly for the amount Bezos had to pay for the settlement, which amounted at 4% of Amazon’s stocks (US$35.6 billion) and which made Scott the third-wealthiest woman in the United States and the 35th wealthiest individual in the world.

New research from sexual wellness brand lovehoney.com has revealed that people not only enjoy dressing up for Halloween, but also enjoy getting undressed. 29% of Americans have admitted that it’s not just birthdays and Valentine’s Day that see an increase in sex, but also Halloween. More people are celebrating Halloween by having sex and 59% of respondents claim that their spooky season sex is more adventurous.

New research reveals that birthdays and Valentine’s Day ignite the most celebratory sex in the United States (U.S.). Valentine’s Day sparks the most adventurous sex because Americans use it as an opportunity to try new sex positions. Over 36% of Americans feel pressure to have sex around a celebratory occasion. A recent survey of over 2,000 Americans from sexual wellness brand Lovehoney.com has found that when it comes to celebratory sex, U.S. residents don’t hold back.

64% of respondents said that they’ve gotten down and dirty in the bedroom on their own birthday, 63% on their partner’s birthday, and 61% on Valentine’s Day.

Dallas, Houston and Indianapolis residents partake in Valentine’s sex the most. However, it is unanimous across the rest of the country that birthday sex is the favourite.

The survey found that the most common reason that Americans believe their sex is more adventurous on a celebration is due to:

  1. Trying new positions (35%).
  2. ‘Doing it’ for a longer period of time (45%),

  4. The survey also found that as many as one in seven (13%) Amercian’s celebrate occasions by participating in a threesome to spice up their sex.
  5. 36% of Americans feel pressure to have celebration sex
  6. While a ‘birthday blowjob’ is a common occurrence, the research found that over one-third of Americans (36%) actually feel pressure to have sex and perform due to it being an occasion.
  7. For those aged 18 to 14, half (50%) of respondents within this age group have also admitted to feeling the pressure to perform on their partner’s birthday.

How to avoid feeling pressure to have celebration sex

Dr. Justin Lehmiller, social psychologist and research fellow at The Kinsey Institute, shared his advice for how you can avoid feeling pressured to have sex on a celebration, and how you can address this with your partner:

“When you start having sex out of obligation, this can decrease your future sexual desire because, odds are, the sex won’t be great. Obligatory sex can create more issues in your sex life than it solves. If sex is starting to feel obligatory in your relationship, it’s time to have a sexual check-in with your partner. What is and isn’t working for you? How can you get back to having the sex you really want?”

Bedding expert reveals how to clean a memory foam mattress topper

How to Clean a Mattress Topper
You cannot put a mattress topper in the washing machine, the cleaning process is different from washing bed sheets. This is how you clean a mattress topper:

Vacuum clean. Take the mattress topper off your bed and put it on the floor to make it easier to reach all the corners. We advise using a vacuum with a soft brush attachment, as a harder brush can damage the fabric cover. Powerful handheld cleaners or water-based cleaners are effective.Go in gentle circular motions to clean dust and grime. When done, flip the mattress over and do the other side. If using a water-based vacuum cleaner, ensure the topper is completely dry before putting it back on your bed. This can take anywhere between 10-24 hours, depending on thickness.

Best practice is to vacuum once a week, or every time you wash your bed sheets. Frequent vacuuming will prevent dust and debris from building up.

Spot clean stains. Stains can be caused by sweat and body oils or accidental spills. Be sure to spot clean as soon as you notice the stain. Use a light-coloured, clean cloth to remove stains as darker colors may bleed when dipped in cleaning solutions. There are general rules to removing stains but we recommend reading the care label instructions before using anything on the topper. Here’s a few cleaning methods using items that you likely have around house:

Laundry detergent: Use a mild liquid detergent diluted with water. Avoid low-quality or powder detergents as they can discolor or alter the texture of the fabric cover. Mix detergent and water in equal parts in a bowl. Dip your cloth in the solution and rub it into the stain in circular motions. Let the solution rest on the stain for 30 minutes. Take another damp cloth and wipe the solution off. Gradually rub the cloth over the stain a few times and ensure there’s no detergent left on the topper. Clean with a dry towel by blotting the area.

Even without any stains, you can use laundry detergent to deodorize and clean the mattress after vacuuming. To do so, mix one part detergent and two parts warm water in a spray bottle. Gently spray over the topper, try to avoid getting it too wet, as this can damage the memory foam. Move the bottle as you spray to ensure an even spray. Wait for the topper to dry before putting it back on your bed.

Baking soda: Baking soda is a good stain remover which also neutralizes odor. Mix one part baking soda and two parts cold water. Rub solution on the stain, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Dip a dry cloth in clean water and remove any residue. Blot dry with a clean towel or paper towel. Alternatively, sprinkle baking soda directly onto the stain and vacuum it up after 8 hours or overnight. You can also use baking soda to deodorize the mattress topper. Sprinkle all over the mattress and leave for 8 hours or overnight and vacuum any residue. 

Distilled white vinegar: Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a bowl. Take a soft cloth and dip it in the solution. Gently rub into the stain using circular motions, moving inwards, which minimizes the chance of spreading the stain. Repeat until the stain disappears. Once the stain is removed, wipe off the solution with a cloth dipped in clean water. Pat dry with a towel or paper towel.

Boric acid: Moisten the stained area with clean water, then sprinkle boric acid onto it. Dab and blot the stain with a sponge or soft cloth in circular motions until the stain has gone. Avoid scrubbing as this could set the stain further. Wipe clean with a dry towel. Vacuum the topper once dry and ensure no residue is left.

Air dry. Make sure you dry the topper completely as any leftover moisture can encourage mold and mildew to grow, damaging the topper. Memory foam takes a while to dry. Keep it in a well-ventilated room with fans on to speed the drying process. The topper can be exposed to direct sunlight for around 30 minutes in the morning which will help to absorb moisture and eliminate odors without having to do anything. If you air dry in sunlight at noon or afternoon it can damage the memory foam as it’s too hot.

Do you remember playing your favorite retro video or computer game? Now, graphics and technology have evolved but more than half of Americans say newer isn’t always better. 

A nationwide survey found more than 3 in 4 Americans would still play classic computer/video games if they were available and almost half say they miss their old favorite so much that they’d be willing to donate money or crowdfund to get a new version of it.

68% who own classic consoles still use them regularly and 1 in 5 bought a classic console recently to play retro games. The most played classic computer (PC) games: Solitaire, Minesweeper, The Sims, The most played classic video games: Super Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros, and Donkey Kong.

Why are Americans so obsessed with the classics? More than 3 in 5 say they turn to the old games because they remind them of their childhood and 80% say they feel nostalgic when playing classic games.Take a look at the full report for the most missed games by generation, the classic games people still actively play.

In June 2022, we surveyed 1,008 people to get their feedback about their favorite video and computer games. Respondents ranged in age from 18 to 74 with an average age of 37. 49% were male, 47% female, 3% nonbinary, and 1% transgender.

Top 5 American Neighborhood Annoyances

Do you know 53% of Americans do not care about their neighbors?

Whether you share a wall, a fence, or live across the street, a new nationwide study is breaking down the biggest frustrations in the neighborhood.

  • 70% talk to their neighbors but 45% do not want to speak.
  • 62% have confronted a neighbor over their behavior, whether it’s leaving a note, arguing face-to-face, or leaving it to their spouse or roommate.
  • Top 5 biggest annoyances: noise, not cleaning up after pets, being intrusive/nosy, parking issues, and unsupervised children.

When it comes to noise, what type of complaints are most common? The top five are loud music, loud adults talking/shouting, loud pets, and loud children.

METHODOLOGY

Lombardo Homes surveyed 1,212 Americans to get their feedback on difficult neighbors and how they deal with those annoyances. Respondents were 49% female and 49% male, with an age range of 18 to 79 and an average age of 41 years old.

The types of homes survey respondents live in include: single-family homes (61%), multi-family homes (3%), apartments (25%), townhomes (5%), condos (3%), tiny homes (1%), mobile home (2%). The areas in which respondents live include the city (29%), the suburbs (54%), and rural areas (17%).

Blacks in National Security | Fact Sheet 2022

2022 Blacks in National Security Reception. Black Americans only make 16% of the National Security community. They are well qualified.

Summer is a great time to connect with those in the community. It was great discussing the importance of National Security and why talent requisition should focus more on Black America recruitment.

According to Zippia database for National Security statistics :

  • 29% of the National Security workers are women
  • 71% of the National Security workers are men
  • 57% of the National Security are White people
  • Members of the Democratic party dominate the National Security Arena
  • The average National Security employee stays with one company for 5.0 years.
  • More diversity in the National Security arena is crucial because our counterterrorism strategy needs to address more than black and white issues.

As someone who has always been a minority of the majority, I noticed the National Security community needs more diversity for counterterrorism strategic planning and to address top National Security priorities.

Only 16% of Black Americans and 15% of Hispanic or Latino are part of the National Security community. And the recruitment paths are either non-existing or hard to navigate.

Many minority groups enter the National Security career path through Military experience, Politics, or Contractual experiences. Often the best opportunities are based on who you know. But that can be encouraging for some job candidates because you can train up if you have the right mentors or dedication to be self taught and focus on certifications.

The best advice I can give to black americans, latinos, and other marginalized groups is to be self-driven and a continuous learner. But you can also go to networking events and conferences to find good mentors that will give you a fair chance.

Just because you hear a few no’s or people try to make you feel you are unqualified, doesn’t mean you cannot succeed in this industry. Often those misguided statements are based on institutional racism, sexism, or for dollars.

Work smart. Work hard. Network. And more importantly see if someone brave, who is nothing like you, will support you in mentorship or training. There is hope and demand for your skill sets.
