Across the United States of America (USA), people have been looking for ways to lose weight. The most popular diet plans have been compiled by Total Shape – these were the most searched diet plans in the USA in 2022. 
Keto Diets were the most popular in 2022 with 97% of the American total searches focused on Golo Diet Plans and most of the total searches all from the keto and 7-day diet plan for weight loss.          

Keto Diets were the most searched for by Americans in the last 12 months. The diet encourages low carbohydrate intake but increases fat intake. It makes the body enter a ketosis state which burns fat and uses it as energy.  The diet plan is popular worldwide with an average of 156,000 searches taking place each month.

Americans made up 33% of the searches with a substantial 52,000 searches. The Mediterranean diet plan came in second with an average of 20,000 searches each month in the US. The diet doesn’t follow any strict rules, but encourages fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes and healthy fats while restricting processed foods, added sugars and refined grains.

Though less than half the number of people searching for keto diets searched for Mediterranean diets, Americans made up for 77% of the worldwide 26,000 searches showing it’s substantially more popular in America than anywhere else. 

Making up 65% of the worldwide average monthly searches of 23,000, Americans searched for diabetic diet plan 15,000 times each month. Not too dissimilar to the Mediterranean diet, a diabetic diet requires a limit on refined grains and added sugars. The second highest proportion of searches to come out of America was for the carnivore diet. 87% of the total 15,000 searches came from Americans.  

The 13,000 Americans who searched for the diet would have found that a carnivore diet is extremely restrictive and only allows people to eat animal products like meat, fish, eggs and some dairy. At the halfway mark we reach a military diet. The diet is one that actually has nothing to do with the military and instead focuses on a three-day calorie deficit. It’s thought to be one that can help a person lose weight fast. 10,000 of the 16,000 monthly average searches came from Americans. The dash diet was searched by an average of 10,000 people each month in the US; 71% of all searches. Standing for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, the dash diet is thought to help people reduce high blood pressure.  

A 7-day diet plan was searched for an average of 32,000 times worldwide. Americans made up 28% of that with 9,000 searches coming from the US. Despite only 1,000 fewer searches compared to the dash diet, Americans made up a much smaller proportion of the 7-day diet plan search due to a much higher worldwide search. This was the second most searched diet plan globally after the keto diet. Up next is a low-carb diet.

Used as a blanket term for a range of diets that limit carbohydrate intake, it came up in eighth place with just 7,500 Americans searching for it each month on average. Just under half the total worldwide search, 47% of Americans would have found out that some of the other diet plans on our list, including the keto diet and Mediterranean diet, are included in the low-carb bracket. 

Arguably the most well-known low-carb diet some decades ago, the Atkins diet came in at ninth. Named after Dr Robert C. Atkins, who wrote about weight loss in his best-selling book in 1972, the Atkins diet was searched for on average 6,800 times by Americans. This was 62% of the global 11,000 average searches. Finally, bringing up the rear is the golo diet. The diet, created by a company and named after the motto “Go Lose Weight,” which was searched for by an average of 6,600.  

This was the highest proportion of American searches compared to any of the searches with just 6,800 searches worldwide, meaning that only 200 further searches for the golo diet came from the rest of the world. A spokesperson for Total Shape said:

“People are constantly trying to lose weight and keep it off, but it’s fascinating to see which diets are the most popular.  “

Keto diets does not appear to be slowing down any time soon, both in the U.S. and the rest of the world. 

The Dash Diet is an interesting development as well. While it’s not great so many people have high blood pressure – according to the CDC, nearly half of American adults suffer from high blood pressure – it’s positive to see that so many are proactively looking for a diet to suit them.”

October 2022, Approximately 500 American pet owners were surveyed on their pet expenses and ownership habits. Respondents were aged 18 to 75 years old, with an average age of 40 years old. Respondents were 49% male, 50% female, and 1% transgender/non-binary.

1. Acknowledge each other’s struggles

 When being faced with a broken family, often we say, “I don’t know where to start” but what we actually mean is: “I’m scared to start.”

After a family fallout, one of the hardest aspects is to accept that the other party feels wronged in some way by your actions, even if they were not intended to cause hurt. However, acknowledging how the other party feels, whether you agree or not, can show empathy and understanding that can then lead to more effective communication to be built.  

Prince Harry has been incredibly open about the many struggles he has faced in his life, such as the lack of contact and accountability, that he feels the Royal family are responsible. The struggles that Prince Harry details in his autobiography appear to stem from childhood trauma and repressed emotions from the environment he grew up in, which many find relatable and can empathize.  An acknowledgement from the family, whether private or public, of the difficulties that the duke feels he is facing could lead to a reconciliation.

However, the same sentiment applies the other way round; Prince Harry should also acknowledge that the Palace may view events differently – as the late Queen famously said ‘recollections may vary’ – and their views are also valid.  

2. Find common ground 

Reconnecting in a family can often help either party bond, no matter how big or small. This common ground can present itself in many ways, such as an event you may both attend or just a shared interest.

Using something that the both of you have in common can be used as a catalyst for building up communication again.  In Prince Harry’s case, causes that are close to his heart and the rest of the Royal Family’s, such as the Invictus Games, are a chance to rekindle a relationship and begin communicating again. 

3. Take the first step and extend an olive branch 

This can be a difficult step to take, however if there has been a severe breakdown in communication within a family, it might be necessary. Reaching out to the other party and offering some sort of gesture, whether this is an invite for coffee, a kind letter, or can help the relationship to start rebuilding.

It can also reveal where both parties are at in terms of emotions and if they want to pursue a future relationship. It has been reported that Prince Harry and Meghan have been invited to King Charles III’s coronation in May 2023, which is an olive branch from the family to the couple.

The trauma that Prince Harry has recounted and shared with the world recently can manifest itself in many ways, and Prince Harry likely has feelings of abandonment from his family and is seeking some form of compassion and communication from them.The occasion of King Charles III’s coronation is cause for celebration as we celebrate the beginning of the King’s reign, and such a meaningful and happy occasion may be the perfect backdrop for reconciliation.

4. Set and respect boundaries 

If the communication is starting up again, it is important to ensure that boundaries are set to avoid another rift occurring. Establish with yourself the boundaries you would like to set so that the relationship stays healthy and positive for you and communicate those to the other party so that everybody is on the same page. Similarly, listen and respect the boundaries of the other party, whatever they may be.  Prince Harry and the Royal family alike appear to have similar strict boundaries when it comes to the idea of privacy, however both parties’ action this in very different ways. Therefore, when communication starts again, they should both immediately share the boundaries that they are and are not comfortable with.  

5. Take it slow

 It may be exciting or feel like a relief to have your relationship with your family begin to repair but remember to take it slow. The other party may be more hesitant than you are to jump straight back into the way the relationship used to be, acknowledging and respecting that it is crucial to solving any and all problems.  

The Royal family, despite being extensive, are a very tight knit family, therefore, they may be hesitant to let Prince Harry and Meghan back into their circle after this fallout, which is something Prince Harry and Meghan must recognize. If the couple can recognize this hesitancy, they can more effectively communicate and build the relationship back up at a pace that suits everyone.

Determine your Daily Calorie Requirements 

Use a Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) calculator to find out how many calories it would take to maintain your current weight. These calculators can be found online. Use your height, weight and activity levels to calculate how many calories you need to maintain, lose and/or gain weight. 

Create a Calorie Deficit 

Take your maintenance number and subtract 500 calories from it. This is what you should be aiming for daily and one of the best ways to monitor your calories is to track your food intake by writing information down or use an app. Don’t forget to look at the portion sizes on packets and weigh your food.

Remember: You can lose more weight by drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated and eat high fiber food to keep your digestive system healthy.

Patrick Dale shares this advice for fitness health beginners: 

“A lot of people focus on cardio for weight loss, but strength training is equally important. In fact, you’ll lose weight faster and more easily if you do both. 

Beginners may be tempted to dive head-first into an intense workout plan, but that would be a mistake. Doing more exercise than you can comfortably handle is a good way to end up sore and even injured. Also, training too hard too soon could put you off exercise for good.”

Often Fitness Health Beginners start with a full-body plan that includes strength training three times a week on non-consecutive days with cardio in between. It is important to give your muscles time to recover after training to prevent injury. 

Patrick Dale recommends doing the following workout on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday each week, including 2-3 sets, 12-20 reps, and 60-90 seconds of recovery:

How can we increase access to and use of gyms and recreational facilities? Would incentives – such as tax deductions for gym memberships – or penalties – such as higher health care premiums – be more effective?

“Establishing shared use agreements, which allow for public access to existing recreation facilities or spaces when not being used, is one strategy. And positive motivation rather than punitive is typically more effective when it comes to encouraging healthy behaviors, so incentives rather than penalties would be the way to go. Ultimately, for someone to engage in and maintain a physically active lifestyle, it needs to be easily accessible and they need to enjoy it.” Connie Tompkins, Ph.D. – Associate Professor, University of Vermont
 
What tips do you have for someone looking to maintain an active lifestyle on a budget?
 
“Just move. Being active does not mean one has to have expensive gadgets or equipment. A decent pair of running/cross-trainers can go a long way to support building up steps throughout the day – a good target is 7500/day. A practical way to build up to these step goals would be taking light to brisk walks for just 10-15 min after each main meal (e.g., breakfast lunch or dinner). Another thought would be to make ‘exercise snacks’ a part of your day.

Many of us get older, we sit for most of the working day given our jobs. If people can get up and walk around for 1-5 min an hour, that would help too.

In line with low-budget activity would be to do bodyweight exercises, including body squats, jumping jacks, lunges, push-ups, or planks for 1 to 5 minutes an hour, this could go a long way in curbing blood glucose, blood pressure, and lipid levels to even improving cognition throughout the day not to mention mental well-being.

Another idea could be to purchase resistance bands that help mix up the type of weight lifting one does. These are portable and easy to take to work or hotels when traveling. A jump rope too in addition is a great buy for a low cost that provides tremendous cardiovascular workouts. If inclined, one can buy a stability ball and use this as a chair. “I love to encourage people to look for opportunities where they can ‘sneak’ in physical activity throughout their typical day – park in a spot further away from a building, take the stairs, walk while on the phone – these may seem small and insignificant, but small changes add up. Public libraries frequently host yoga or other fitness classes, offer free passes to state parks, and exercise videos that patrons can physically check out or download.
